Lucas Baarlaer

A former swimmer at North Dakota, Lucas Baarlaer is in his fourth season as assistant coach for the Fighting Sioux.

In his first year of coaching, Baarlear helped coach the UND swim teams to a combined nine school records and four NCAA "B" cut times at the 2009-10 Conference USA Championship.

During the 2010-11 season, he helped guide Carissa Gormally to a pair of C-USA individual titles, the first DI female titles in UND history.

Continuing his work with Gormally, Baarlear is currently training her for the 2012 Olympics trials. This past summer, she swam qualifying times in both the 50 and the 100 free, and must do so again next year in order to qualify for the U.S. National Team.

A four-time letterwinner for UND from 2003-08, Baarlaer competed in the freestyle events and consistently placed in the top eight for UND at the North Central Conference Championship.

A native of Boulder, Colo., Baarlaer graduated from UND in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and exercise science with a minor in coaching.

He is currently pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology with an exercise physiology and sports psychology concentration.

Baarlaer is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association.
