Since his arrival in the fall of 2018, Dan McCarty has made an immediate impact to the Fighting Hawks multi-events and jumps, rewriting the multis record book and guiding Kyley Foster to indoor All-America honors.

Along with his duties in the jumps and multi-events, McCarty also oversees the Fighting Hawks sprinters. Since taking over the sprinters, McCarty coached North Dakota's first Summit League Champion on the track, Lucy Steinmeyer, in the 400-meters.

In fact, McCarty has coached the Fighting Hawks first-two Summit League Indoor Champions in Steinmeyer (400-meters) and Foster (pole vault). Foster became the program's first-ever Summit League Champion on Feb. 23, 2019 with a PR height of 14-2.75 to qualify her for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, where she tied for 10th to earn Second Team All-America honors.

He also coached a pair of All-Summit League high jumpers in Erica Benson and Izzy Waite, who finished second and third at the 2019 league outdoor track & field championships, helping the Fighting Hawks women's team to a third-place finish.

In 2020, North Dakota multis' Erica Benson and Jack Vetsch each set the indoor records in the pentathlon and heptathlon with Benson setting the new mark at the 2020 Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championship to finish fourth after earning All-Summit honors the previous year in the event.

Announced as assistant coach on Sept. 18, 2018, McCarty came to North Dakota from the University of Central Missouri, where he served on the coaching staff of and competed as a student-athlete for legendary coach Kip Janvrin. An eight-time academic all-American as a student-athlete, McCarty spent the past two years as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater under Janvrin.

During his tenure as a graduate assistant, McCarty assisted with the development of Central Missouri’s sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, pole vaulters, javelin throwers, and multi-event student-athletes. He also played an integral role in recruiting efforts for the program.

McCarty’s foray into the coaching profession following a highly-decorated career on the track that saw him garner eight academic all-American awards and qualify twice for the NCAA Division II Championship. He was also a six-time All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) performer.

McCarty graduated from UCM in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in health sciences. He earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from UCM in 2018.
