Kelvin Ziegler enters his 14th season as the all-time baseball win leader at UND, surpassing legendary Sioux coach Pinky Kraft in 2003. Ziegler has led the Sioux to 20-win seasons in eight of his first 13 years (the 1997 season was cut short due to the flood in Grand Forks). He owns an overall 307-232-2 record (.567) during his tenure at UND. 2006 wrapped up with the Sioux tying for fifth place in the NCC Tournament. The team finished 12-28 and 4-14 in the NCC.
Beginning in 1994, Ziegler's teams have been traveling to Fort Meyers, Fla. during spring break to compete against some of the best Division II schools in the country at the Gene Baseball Classic.
Since Ziegler took over the reins of the Fighting Sioux baseball program, UND has produced several all-conference, all-region and Division II preseason All-America players and the 1994 NCAA slugging percentage statistical champion.
Coach Ziegler became the first Fighting Sioux baseball coach to be named North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1994. That year UND also produced five all-conference selections as well as the NCC's Pitcher of the Year in J.J. Scheving.
In 1995, UND was ranked in the national poll and finished as the North Central Conference runner-up. Ziegler’s 1998 squad finished second in the NCC and 16th in the nation in won-loss percentage (.712). The 1998 team also set or tied over 30 school records and produced the NCC’s co-most valuable player. A total of 11 players have turned professional following their Fighting Sioux baseball career.
Ziegler’s players have not only excelled on the playing field but also in the classroom, as several of his student-athletes have been named to the North Central Conference all-academic baseball teams and GTE All-District VII college baseball teams. Ziegler came to UND in 1991 as an assistant baseball coach and served in that capacity for three years.
During the 1993 season, Ziegler helped guide the Fighting Sioux to the NCAA Regional title and a berth to the NCAA Division II World Series.
In 1994, Ziegler was elevated to the head coaching position. During his tenure, he has led the Sioux program to three second-place finishes in the North Central Conference regular season standings and NCC championship game appearances in 1995 and 1998.
A native of Minot, N.D., Ziegler brings a wealth of coaching experiences from the high school and American Legion baseball levels to the UND baseball program.
A graduate of Minot State University, Ziegler was a four-year letterwinner in baseball and was twice named to the all-conference squad.
Ziegler earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and history and holds a master’s degree in educational administration and cognate in athletic administration.
Ziegler's wife, Cathy, is a physical therapist and athletic trainer at the UND Center for Sports Medicine. They have a 7-year-old daughter, Peyton, and a 4-year-old son, Zachary.
