ST. CLOUD, Minn.--Ryan Malone scored three goals and added two assists as #15 St. Cloud State upended the fifth-ranked Fighting Sioux 7-3 Friday night at the National Hockey Center.
The two teams were deadlocked at 3-3 after two periods but four Husky goals in the first 9:35 of the final frame -- including Jon Cullen's game-winner at 2:55 -- keyed the win and led to UND's first loss of the season. UND is now 6-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the WCHA. The Huskies improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
St. Cloud's Joe Motzko opened the scoring at 3:31 of the first period, walking out in front of the net from the sideboards and beating UND starter
Josh Siembida. Malone made it 2-0 with 5:30 left in the first, banging home a loose puck in a scramble in front of the UND net.
UND got on the board 1:54 into the second period, as
James Massen knocked home a
Brandon Bochenski rebound for his second goal of the season. Malone gave the Huskies their two-goal lead back when he took a Joe Motzko pass and walked in alone and beat Siembida for his second of the game.
Andy Schneider made it 3-2 with an unassisted point blast with 3:04 left in the second period, and
Jason Notermann pulled the Sioux even with a power play goal -- his fourth -- with just 40 seconds remaining in the middle frame.
The Huskies regained the lead for good when Tim Conboy's shot hit the post and bounced right to Cullen, who burried the rebound from the right faceoff dot for the eventual game-winner. Conboy made it 5-3 36 seconds later and Malone completed the hat trick with another breakaway goal at 9:33. Conboy rounded out the scoring with his second of the game at 10:25.
Grand Forks native Jake Moreland made 40 saves to improve to 4-0 on the season. Siembida made 13 saves and took the loss, while
Jake Brandt -- who relieved Siembida after St. Cloud's fifth goal -- made five saves.
The two teams square off again Saturday night. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
