COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? The No. 1-ranked Colorado College men's hockey team scored two goals in a 50-second span in the first period, and that was all the Tigers needed in a 2-1 win over ninth-ranked North Dakota on Friday before a sold-out crowd at World Arena.
UND fell to 14-9-2 overall and 10-8-1 in the WCHA, while Colorado College raised its record to 19-3-1 overall and 12-3 in the WCHA.
CC got on the board at 15:23 of the first period on a power play goal by Joey Crabb. It was his ninth goal of the season. The Tigers extended their lead to 2-0 just 50 seconds later when Trevor Frischmon scored his sixth goal of the season.
The Sioux narrowed the score to 2-1 on Rory McMahon's (Sr., Perdue, Saskatchewan) 10th goal of the season that came on a nice crossing pass from Rastislav Spirko (Fr., Vrutky, Slovakia) just after a UND power play ended. Defenseman Robbie Bina (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) also picked up an assist on the play.
UND outshot the Tigers 20-14 through two periods, but CC surpassed its two-period total in the third, when it outshot UND, 16-8.
Sioux goalie Philippe Lamoureux (Fr., Grand Forks, N.D.) made numerous outstanding saves in the third, and the Sioux killed off two 5-on-3 situations late in the period.
UND pulled Lamoureux with a minute remaining, but Tigers' goalie Curtis McElhinney stopped several Sioux last-minute scoring opportunities.
The teams will meet again on Saturday at 8:07 p.m. Central time.
NOTES: McMahon's 10 goals equal the career high 10 goals he scored last year. The loss was UND's fifth straight at Colorado Springs World Arena. The Sioux last beat the Tigers in Colorado Springs in December 2000.
