DAYTON, Ohio ? UND goalie Jordan Parise (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) stopped all 37 shots he faced and posted his fifth career shutout to lead the Sioux men's hockey team to a 3-0 win over Miami in the Lefty McFadden Invitational on Saturday.
UND (1-0) will face Michigan State (1-0) on Sunday in a 1:05 p.m. (Central time) afternoon game to close out its first weekend of play this season. The Spartans defeated Wayne State, 5-1, on Saturday.
Parise picked up where he left off last season, when he was one of the hottest goalies in the nation down the stretch (.969 save percentage, 1.65 goals against average in final 12 games) and led the Sioux to the NCAA title game.
Parise made two big saves in the game's first minute, stopping Miami's Ryan Jones on a breakaway in the opening seconds of the game and then kicking out a wrist shot by the Redhawks' Nathan Davis from out front less than a minute later.
But Parise's night was highlighted when he stopped Miami's Chris Michael on a penalty shot at 16:04 of the second period when the score was still just 1-0, UND. It was the second career penalty shot Parise has faced, and he has stopped them both. He also stopped Denver's Connor James on a penalty shot in a Nov. 22, 2003, game in Denver.
Miami outshot the Sioux, 37-22, but UND killed off all 13 RedHawks power play opportunities, while the Sioux were 2-10 on the power play.
The Sioux opened the scoring on the first career goal by Jonathan Toews (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) who scored a power play goal at 17:54 of the first period, with Chris Porter (Jr., Thunder Bay, Ontario) and T.J. Oshie (Fr., Warroad, Minn.) getting assists. Toews nearly scored a second goal later, but his shot that appeared to be going in rang off the pipe.
The Sioux raised their lead to 2-0 on their second power play goal of the night and the first of Oshie's career at 19:24 of the second when Ryan Duncan (Fr., Calgary, Alberta) threaded a pass through traffic to Oshie, who buried it from the left side of the goal. Brian Lee (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) also picked up an assist on the play.
Drew Stafford (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) finished off the scoring with an empty net goal with 12 seconds remaining.
NOTES: Stafford has now recorded a point in six games in a row dating back to last season ... Miami goalie Jeff Zatkoff stopped 19 shots ... The win was UND's fourth straight in season openers.
