UND beats defending national champs: UND opened its season with a 6-0 win over defending NCAA champion Michigan State on Saturday in Grand Forks in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame game.
It was the sixth consecutive year that UND has won its season opener.
It was UND's first shutout in a season opener since Oct. 8, 2005, when the Sioux shut out Miami 3-0 at the Lefty McFadden Invitational in Dayton, Ohio.
Attendance record at the Ralph: A capacity crowd of 11,738 was on hand Saturday, the largest ever to witness a UND home opener. The previous high to attend a UND opening night game in Grand Forks was on Oct. 5, 2001, when 11,690 attended the first game ever at the new Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The capacity crowds at Saturday's game and the Oct. 5, 2001, contest against Minnesota represent the only two opening-night capacity crowds at the new REA.

Captain Kaip: Senior Rylan Kaip (Radville, Saskatchewan) was named the UND captain by vote of his teammates.
Ice chips: Nineteen letterwinners return from last season's squad, with six freshmen joining the team ... Among the letterwinners returning is reigning Hobey Baker Award winner Ryan Duncan (Jr., Calgary, Alberta), who is only the fifth Hobey Baker Award winner in the 27-year history of the award to return to school. The others were Minnesota goalie Robb Stauber (1988 winner) Maine forward Paul Kariya (1993 winner), Michigan State goalie Ryan Miller (2001 winner) and Colorado College forward Marty Sertich (2005 winner).
