GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? University of North Dakota men's hockey goalie Jean-Philippe Lamoureux, a senior from Grand Forks, N.D., has posted four shutouts in UND's first five games this season, an accomplishment that research shows to be a rare feat.
Available records show that it has been 78 years (since January-February 1929) since any current Division I men's hockey team recorded four or more shutouts in its first five games of a season.
The UND athletic department's media relations office researched the year-by-year game-by-game records of all current 59 NCAA Division I men's hockey teams and discovered the following:
? Since the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) began as the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League (MCHL) in 1951-52, no league team, to include all current members and former league members Michigan, Michigan State, Northern Michigan and Notre Dame, recorded four shutouts in its first five games of a season. Therefore no WCHA goalie has ever recorded four shutouts in his team's first five games of a season.
? By expanding the search to include all current NCAA Division I men's hockey teams, it was determined that the mark has been equaled on just three occasions previously:
1.) The first time was 100 years ago, when Cornell University recorded four shuouts in its only four games in 1907-08, shutting out Cascadilla (5-0), Rochester (10-0), Army (2-0) and Rensselaer (4-0). The Big Red finished 4-0 that season. The goalie or goalies in those four games are not known.
2.) Prior to the formation of the MCHL/WCHA, the University of Minnesota accomplished the feat twice in the 1920s. In 1922-23, the Gophers opened with a 6-1 win over Ramsey Technical School and then posted four consecutive shutouts, beating St. Thomas (4-0), Michigan twice (2-0 and 3-0) and Wisconsin (4-0). The shutout string then ended with a 1-1 tie against Wisconsin. The goalie or goalies from that season are not available. Minnesota finished the season with a 10-1-1 record.
3.) The 1928-29 Minnesota team started the season with six consecutive shutouts, beating the North Dakota Aggies (12-0), Michigan twice (4-0 and 6-0), Michigan Tech twice (3-0 and 5-0) and the Chicago AA team (4-0). The shutout string ended with a 1-1 tie against the Chicago AA team. The goalie or goalies involved in those shutouts are not available. The Gophers finished that season 14-2-1 overall.
NOTE: For this research, records were not available from schools that may have previously had Division I men's hockey programs but have since dropped the sport from their intercollegiate athletic program.
