GRAND FORKS, N.D.--UND Athletics and the UND Letterwinners Association are pleased to announce the 2007 Hall of Fame Induction Class. UND will celebrate the Hall of Fame over Potato Bowl, Sept. 15, 2007. The Hall of Fame banquet will be on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m., in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
This year's individual inductees are: Laurie Bakke (women's basketball '78-'82); Andy Dahlen (football '77-'80); Jim Goodrich (men's basketball '73-'76); Dan Clausen (men's basketball '80-'82); Marion (Warner) Nielson (women's swimming and diving '87-'91) and Margie Hutson Evers (women's track and field '81-'84).
Team inductees are the 1979 football team, the 1982 men's basketball team and the 1989 women's swimming and diving team.
Dave Gunther, head men's basketball coach from 1971-88, will receive an Honorary Letterwinner Award and Head Men's Hockey Coach Dave Hakstol will be honored with the Thomas J. Clifford Award.
Laurie Bakke, originally from Thompson, N.D., played on the Fighting Sioux women's basketball team from 1978-82. Laurie averaged 10.3 points per game, with a career total of 1,031 points. She is one of just 25 players in UND women's basketball to score 1,000 career points. Laurie blocked 115 shots during her tenure and is ranked fifth in UND's history for most blocked shots. She is also sixth on UND's career rebounding list. Laurie resides in Kirkland, Wash.
Andy Dahlen, a native of Mabel, Minn., was a UND linebacker from 1977-80. Andy still holds many Fighting Sioux football records. He ranks second in career solo tackles, fourth in career assisted tackles, fifth in single season solo tackles, and tenth in single season total tackles. Andy was a member of the All-NCC team in 1979, football captain in 1980 and an All-American in 1980. Andy lives in Fargo.
Jim Goodrich, originally from Madrid, Iowa, was on the Fighting Sioux men's basketball team from 1973-76. Jim was selected to the All-NCC team twice. He averaged 15 points per game in three seasons. He ranks 23rd on UND's all-time scoring list with a total of 1,095 points. All three UND teams Jim played on won or shared the NCC title. Jim is also a member of the UND men's basketball All-Century team. Jim lives in Coralville, Iowa.
Dan Clausen, originally from Omaha, Neb., was a member of the Fighting Sioux men's basketball team from 1980-82. A two-time All-NCC selection, Dan was named NCC Most Valuable Player in 1982. He ranks 24th on UND's all-time scoring list with 1,093 points. Despite playing just two seasons, Dan averaged 17.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. He still holds UND's records for most blocked shots in a game, swatting 10 Augustana shots in January 23, 1982. Dan is also a member of the UND men's basketball All-Century team. He resides in Evanston Park, Australia.
Marion (Warner) Nielson, a native of Havre, Mont., was on the Fighting Sioux women's swimming and diving team from 1987-91. During Marion's tenure, she was named All-American 28 times (the most an athlete can be named All-American). Marion was the national champion in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly in 1990. She was also a member of four national championship relay teams. Marion was named NCC Swimmer of the Year in 1989, winning 13 NCC individual championships throughout her college career. Marion lives in Missoula, Mont..
Margie Hutson Evers, originally from Grafton, N.D., holds the all-time UND indoor record in the 55-meter dash and the 60-meter dash. In outdoor track, she continues to own the second best time in the 200-meter dash, and third best time in the 100-meter dash. Margie was on the UND women's track and field team from 1981-84. She was a member of several winning relay teams during her track career for UND. Margie lives in Grand Forks.
1979 Fighting Sioux Men's football team: Under the leadership of Head Coach Gene Murphy, the 1979 football team finished the season 10-2. The team was North Central Conference champions and competed in the NCAA Division II playoffs, losing in the first round. The 1979 team was the first UND team in school history to win 10 games. Four team members were named All-Americans (Dale Markham, Joe Friederichs, Mike Voelker, Paul Muckenhirn). All-Century team members include: Todd Thomas, Mike Voelker, Joe Friedrichs, Tom Biolo, Jeff Compton, and Paul Muckenhirn.
1982 Men's Basketball Team: The 1982 Fighting Sioux men's basketball team was NCC champions, NCAA Division II North Central Region Champions and NCAA Division II National Quarterfinalists. Led by Head Coach David Gunther, the 1982 men's basketball team finished the season 27-5. All-Century team members include: Dan Clausen, Aaron Harris and Steve Brekke.
1989 Women's Swimming and Diving Team: Coached by Mike Stromberg, the 1989 women's swimming and diving teams were North Central Conference Champions and placed second at Nationals in Buffalo, N.Y. The 200 medley relay team brought home a national championship and eight swimmers and one diver were named All-Americans that year.
Dave Hakstol is the 2007 Thomas J. Clifford Award winner. Hakstol took over as men's head hockey coach at UND in 2004. Dave has led UND to the NCAA Frozen Four in each of his first three seasons as head coach. He has a 78-45-11 overall record in his first three seasons.
The Thomas J. Clifford Award honors the former UND president who served from 1971-1992. It is presented annually to a coach who has, during the previous year or through cumulative coaching achievements, served the coaching field as a leader with distinction. The selectee must have earned an undergraduate degree from UND and his/her coaching must have taken place at the secondary or collegiate level. This award is limited to one selection per year.
Dave is a native of Warburg, Alberta, Canada. He resides in Grand Forks.
Dave Gunther, UND head men's basketball coach from 1971-88, will receive the Honorary Letterwinner Award. A two-time All-Big 10 player at Iowa and former NBA player, Dave was North Dakota's 16th coach. Dave is UND's second all-time winningest men's basketball coach with 332 all-time victories. Dave finished his 18-year coaching career at UND with a record of 332-177 overall, five NCC titles and four NCAA Division II region titles.
The Honorary Letterwinner Award is given annually to a person who, in the opinion of the Letterwinner Board of Directors, has contributed significantly to the furtherance of UND athletics. It is recommended that this award be limited to one selection per year.
Dave is originally from LeMars, Iowa. He lives in Grand Forks.
