Former Sioux Greenwood named regional scholar athlete of the year

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--Former University of North Dakota football standout Michael Greenwood (2003-06) has been named the 2006-07 North Central Region Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced today by the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner's Association.

Greenwood is one of 16 regional winners, eight men and eight women, to receive the award that is co-sponosored by the CCA and Disney Sports Attractions. A male and female Division II Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be selected from the 16 regional winners.

A Jamestown, N.D., native, Greenwood graduated from UND last May with a bachelor's degree in biology and is currently in his first year of medical school at UND. Greenwood was a four-year letterwinner at defensive back for the Fighting Sioux and helped the team earn an NCAA postseason berth in each of his four seasons.

Greenwood started all 13 games at free safety as a senior and ranked sixth on the team with 51 total tackles. Off the field, Greenwood carried a 3.90 grade point average as an undergraduate and was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America first team. He was also named the North Central Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned Academic All-NCC honors.

This past August Greenwood also received a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA.

The CCA and Disney Sports Attractions will announce the male and female national award winners in late September.
