GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- University of North Dakota defenseman Taylor Chorney, who was instrumental at both ends of the ice in a pair of conference home victories over Michigan Tech last weekend, has been named Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for Jan. 15-21.
A 6-0, 196-pound junior from Hastings, Minn., Chorney scored two goals and drew assists on two others for four scoring points, and was part of a stellar team defensive effort that allowed just two even-strength goals, blanked the Huskies on all 10 of their power-play chances, and limited them to 15 shots on goal last Friday (Jan. 11) and to 18 last Saturday (Jan. 12).
An All-WCHA and All-America second team honoree a season ago, Chorney contributed a power-play goal and an assist in North Dakota's 4-1 win over MTU at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks last Friday evening and another power-play goal and an assist on the game-opening tally last Saturday night as the Fighting Sioux posted another 4-1 victory.
In addition, Chorney also fired five shots on goal and earned a +1 in the series. On the 2007-08 season, the Edmonton Oilers (NHL) draftee has 16 points (2g, 14a) while playing in all 21 games for the No. 6-ranked Sioux. UND (12-8-1) next takes on league-rival Minnesota State in a road series on Jan. 18-19.
