GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? Former Fighting Sioux defensive standout and recent defensive assistant coach Reid “Digger” Anderson has left the North Dakota football coaching staff to pursue a full-time position with the University of Mary. Head U-Mary football coach Myron Schulz announced yesterday the addition of Anderson to the Maurader staff.
A native of Coon Rapids, Minn., Anderson began his coaching career this past season when he helped guide the Fighting Sioux into the era of Division I. As a noted UND linebacker from 2002-05, he was selected by Sioux coach Chris Mussman to work primarily with the inside linebackers.
A three-time All-North Central Conference selection, Anderson was one of the most decorated players to ever wear a Sioux football jersey. During his career, he collected 15 different All-America awards, including 10 first-team accolades. In 2003 and 2005, he was voted the NCC Most Valuable Linebacker.
In 2005, Anderson became the fifth player in Sioux football history to be named a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist ? the award given to the best player in NCAA Division II football.
When the final whistle blew on his collegiate career, Anderson had recorded 366 total tackles, including a school-record 229 solo stops. As a sophomore in 2003, he led all of DII football with a UND single-season record 95 unassisted tackles.
Anderson was also a three-time Academic All-NCC pick and in 2005 he was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team.
Anderson was hired to work as the outside linebackers coach at Mary and will be heavily involved with the special teams.
