GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Kyle Reed
scored just 48 seconds into overtime as the Ohio State men's hockey
team upset No. 6 Bemidji State, 2-1, in the Subway Holiday Classic
Saturday at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Buckeyes snapped a three-game losing streak while handing the
Beavers just their second loss of the season. Ohio State is now 6-9-1
overall (4-5-1-1 CCHA) while Bemidji State is 11-2-1 (6-0-0 CHA).
Tied after 60 minutes, the Buckeyes started overtime with 45 seconds
left on a power play. As the teams returned to even-strength John Albert
came down the ice with the puck, bouncing it off the near boards to
himself and then shooting it on goal. Reed, stationed at the right
corner of the net, took several swipes at the rebound until he finally
jammed the puck in for his first goal of the season.
Sophomore defenseman Sean Duddy had the second assist on the goal - his second of the game for the first multiple-point game of his career.
Bemidji State opened the scoring at 17:29 of the first with a goal
by Aaron McLeod. He fired a one-timer from the left hashes over the
glove of Cal Heeter. He was assisted by Darcy Findlay who backhanded the puck from low in the left corner. Ryan Adams picked up the second helper.
Ohio State tied it up at 1-all at 17:39 of the second. With a line of four Buckeyes skating up the ice, Devon Krogh fired the puck on net from along the far boards and Ian Boots,
charging up the slot, knocked in the rebound for his first goal of the
season. Krogh tallied his third assist of the season and defensive
partner Duddy notched the second helper on the goal.
Heeter had a solid game in net for the Buckeyes, finishing with 20
saves to improve to 5-2-1. BSU goalie Mathieu Dugas, who made 24 saves,
was handed his first loss of the season to move to 3-1-0.
The Buckeye penalty kill continued to improve with a perfect 4-of-4
performance and only allowing a total of three shots with the
man-advantage. The OSU power play was 0-of-3.
After back-to-back weekends on the road, Ohio State returns to
Columbus for three of its next four games. The Buckeyes begin with
Michigan, Dec. 4-5 at Value City Arena, then take on top-ranked Miami
in a home-and-home series Dec. 11-12. The Buckeyes host the Friday game
