GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota forwards Jason Gregoire and Corban Knight have been honored with WCHA weekly awards for their play in UND's sweep of conference rival Minnesota State last weekend in Grand Forks.
Gregoire, a sophomore from Winnipeg, was named WCHA Co-Offensive Player of the Week after a four-goal weekend. He scored two goals in Friday's 4-1 win over the Mavericks, then followed with two more goals in Saturday's 3-2 win. The 5-foot-11, 196-pound Gregoire scored the game-winning goal in both victories and was a +2 on the weekend.
He shared the award with Minnesota Duluth sophomore forward Jack Connolly. Gregoire joins Evan Trupp (Nov. 10) as UND players who have been named offensive player of the week this season.
A third-round draft pick (76th overall) of the New York Islanders in 2007, Gregoire has scored points in 10 of the last 11 games, amassing seven goals and seven assists during that stretch. He has taken over the team lead in points (19) and goals (12) and is tied for the national lead with four game-winning goals.
Knight, a freshman from High River, Alberta, was named the league's rookie of the week. He scored a pair of goals in Friday's victory to snap a personal 18-game goal-scoring drought that dated back to opening night. He was also a +2 and registered four shots on goal.
Knight is the third different Sioux freshman to be named WCHA Rookie of the Week this season, joining fellow forwards Mike Cichy (Oct. 13) and Danny Kristo (Dec. 1).
A fifth-round draft pick (135th overall) of the Florida Panthers last June, Knight was injured late in the game and was unable to play the following night. He is expected to miss at least four to six weeks with an undisclosed injury. Knight has three goals in 20 games this season.
St. Cloud State senior defenseman Garrett Raboin was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.
The fourth-ranked Fighting Sioux (12-6-4, 8-6-2 WCHA) begin a four-game road swing on Friday and Saturday at Minnesota.
