Genoway a candidate for Lowe?s Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - University of North Dakota defenseman and team captain Chay Genoway has been named one of 20 national men's hockey finalists for the 2010-11 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes on- and off-ice excellence.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Genoway, a fifth-year senior from Morden, Manitoba, returned to the Sioux lineup last week after missing all but the first nine games of the 2009-10 season due to post-concussion syndrome. The active leading scorer among WCHA defensemen with 91 career points, Genoway was an American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American as a junior in 2008-09, when he was also named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and an All-WCHA first team pick.

In the classroom, Genoway is a three-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete and a three-time selection to the Academic All-WCHA team. In 2008-09, Genoway was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team, becoming just the second player in UND men's hockey history to achieve the honor.

Genoway has also been an active member of the Grand Forks community, lending his time to numerous charitable activities ranging from the Special Olympics to reading to area classrooms.

The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The winner will be announced during the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Frozen Four in April.
