ORONO, Maine - Second-ranked North Dakota walked into a Black Bears den on Friday night.
Twelfth-ranked Maine scored five times on 10 shots in a penalty-filled first period and cruised to a 7-3 win over the Fighting Sioux, handing UND (3-1-1) its first loss of the season.
It took less than five minutes for a swarming Maine team to swing the momentum decidedly in its favor. Goals in the opening three minutes by Robby Dee and Brian Flynn (power-play) got the Black Bears off and running. Then, just 5:39 into the first period, UND sophomore defenseman Andrew MacWilliam (Calgary, Alberta) received a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for contact to the head. Flynn would score his second goal near the end of the major and just like that, the Sioux were down three goals and one defenseman and starting goalie Brad Eidsness was chased to the bench.
A shorthanded goal by UND's Derek Rodwell (Fr., Taber, Alberta) midway through the frame did nothing to stem the tide; the Black Bears' Will O'Neill (power-play) and Gustav Nyquist score three-and-half minutes apart to send the Sioux to the locker room trailing 5-1.
"We stood around and watched a good team play well," UND head coach Dave Hakstol said. "Our feet weren't moving, we weren't sharp in any one part of our game. That's it."
Maine's power-play unit was the difference in a first period in which the Sioux received 23 penalty minutes to Maine's four. At one point during the game, Maine held an 8-2 edge in power play opportunities.
"We can't give a team with a good, sharp power-play that many opportunities early when they have momentum and that's what we did. That was probably the nail in the coffin for us early in the hockey game," Hakstol said.
The Black Bears continued to apply the pressure in the second period, with Kyle Beattie and Tanner House scoring in the opening 8:03 to make it a 7-1 game.
UND's Matt Frattin (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta) countered with a power-play goal, his team-leading sixth goal of the year and 16th in 18 games, with 4:34 left in the frame.
Senior Brad Malone (Sr., Miramichi, New Brunswick), playing in front of about 40 friends and family, rounded out the scoring at 6:08 of the third period. Stationed in the Maine corner, Malone threw the puck at the net and it glanced off the skate of goalie Shawn Sirman and across the goal line.
The Black Bears finished the night 3-for-10 on the power-play and outshot the Sioux 27-22, the first time UND had been outshot this season.
According to Hakstol, losing MacWilliam early in the first period should not have altered the previously unbeaten Sioux.
"That happens. That's a part of the game. We can't lose players to that type of a play," Hakstol said. "I'm more concerned about that than having to play with five defensemen. We should be able to play with five defensemen any night."
I don't want to hear anyone talk about officiating or anything else. We look at ourselves and we've got to be much better. We can't put ourselves in these positions. We wanted to put some of the pieces of the puzzle back together (after the first period). Whether we did that or not, I guess we'll find out tomorrow night."
Eidsness was pulled after stopping two of five shots. Dell stopped 18 off 22 shots in relief.
The two teams will square off again Saturday night at 6 p.m. Central.
Notes: Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke and New Jersey Devils director of scouting David Conte were among those in attendance ... Former Sioux Justin Duberman was also at the game.
