North Dakota women claim victory over South Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota women's swimming and diving team picked up its second win of the season with a 141 to 96 victory over South Dakota Friday evening at the Hyslop Pool.

"It was a great meet overall," said head coach Steve Parsons. "It was the best one yet. We're looking forward to a little bit of the same tomorrow."

The Fighting Sioux women opened up the evening with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay. The UND "A" team of Veronica Medon (So., Huntsville, Ontario), Kathryn Fristad (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.), Caitlin Conci (Craig, Colo.), and Devonne Dalin (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) won the event with a time of 1:49.45. The "B" team finished close behind with a time of 1:51.70.

Medon finished the day with a pair of individual event titles for a team-high 18 points. She won the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.33 and took the 100 back title with a time of 59.85.

Conci won the 100 fly (58.16) and followed by Kara Fisher (53.41; So., Fergus Falls, Minn.) and Kelsey Richels (54.06; Fr., Wahpeton, N.D.), Devonne Dalin won the 100 free with a mark of 53.25.

Earlier in the day, Fisher won the 50 free for UND with a time of 24.79.

The Sioux went 1-2-3 in the 1000 free as Dalonda Dalin (So., Sioux Falls, Minn.) won the event with a time of 10:44.27, followed by Gabrielle Bunten (10:58.42; Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) and Emma Abrahamson (11:10.24; So., Mankato, Minn.).

The freshman trio of Richels, Kaitlin Bolinske (Williston, N.D.), and Allison Maxwell (Rogers, Minn.) finished 2-3-4 in the 200 free with times of 1:56.46, 1:57.40, and 1:57.61, respectively.

Rachel Lee (Corvallis, Ore.) won the 500 free (5:11.06) and posted UND's top time in the 100 breast (1:07.85).

The 200 free relay team of Devonne Dalin, Bolinske, Alyssa Bailey (Fr., Spearfish, S.D.), and Fisher clocked in at 1:37.73 to wrap up the swimming events.

"I'm really impressed with our girls team already," said Parsons. "They are growing up quickly and doing very well."

On the boards, North Dakota picked up individual titles in both events. Stephenie Varichak (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) won the 3-meter with a score of 259.10. On the 1-meter, Megan Keidel (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.) took first with a score of 230.95, followed by Varichak in second (218.55) and Rachael Waldbillig (Fr., Lexington, Minn.) in fourth (196.55).

"Stephenie had another great day, especially on the 3-meter," said Parsons. "Rachael had a great meet at well. She really showe3d up why she was one of our big recruits last season."

The Fighting Sioux and the Coyotes will hit the pool again Saturday afternoon. Events are scheduled to begin at Noon.
