Media day recap: Sioux host UMD, 2000 Sioux team

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The biggest question at today's University of North Dakota men's hockey media day: Where did all that offense come from in last Saturday's 8-1 victory over No. 4 St. Cloud State?

All the student-athletes that stepped up to the podium echoed similar statements. Nothing changed for the Sioux last Saturday, except that the bounces started to go their way, the rebounds to the right place and the hard work paid off.

"We've been battling and fighting it for a couple weeks now," sophomore Jason Gregoire said. "A game like that gives us confidence. ... We just have to bring that effort night in, night out."

Another talking point centered around the UND power play unit, which exploded for five goals after a significant drought the previous few weeks. One key to that special teams unit was the return of sophomore Brett Hextall.

"That's something that's expected out of me: To be a guy on the power play that makes things happen, bang home a goal or whatever it is," Hextall said, crediting the team for being sharp and burying opportunities.

Finally, outside what's happening on the ice, UND is recognizing the 10th anniversary of the 2000 NCAA national championship team this weekend. A number of former players are returning to be honored, meet fans and sign autographs. Moreover, with the NHL on the Olympic break, it's allowed a number of former players currently still in professional hockey to return to Grand Forks. Coincidentally, the Sioux are hosting Minnesota Duluth and its head coach Scott Sandelin, who was an assistant coach on the 2000 UND team.

"Hopefully, (the reunion) will be the best part of his weekend," UND head coach Dave Hakstol joked.
