LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The University of North Dakota softball team dropped its final game of its spring break trip and the Loyola Marymount Tournament today 5-4 to Bethune-Cookman.
The Wildcats (11-15) were able to score more runs then successful hits as the Sioux (6-17) outhit BCU 11-4.
BCU jumped out to an early lead taking advantage of their limited opportunities like it would all game in the first inning. The Wildcats would convert one hit-batsman and one hit into two runs.
After lining into a double play, the Sioux started a two-out rally to get on the scoreboard in the second inning. Both Lindy Sippola (Grants Pass, Ore.) and Amanda Johnson (Ashby, Minn.) walked to setup a RBI double by senior Amber Roth (Shoreview, Minn.). Sippola scored on the play while Johnson was thrown out at home attempting to score.
The Sioux would follow it up taking a 4-2 lead as D Jantzer (Grants Pass, Ore.) connected for a two-RBI double to left-center field in the third inning. Jantzer would lead the Sioux with the two RBI going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Another opportunistic inning lead to three runs for the Wildcats in the fifth inning. After a leadoff triple, defensive mistakes led to the costly inning for the Sioux. An illegal pitch led to the first run and the Wildcats followed it up with two unearned runs after a defensive error to surpass the Sioux and scoring the eventual game-winning runs.
Kayelee Schoeny (Redlands, Calif.), Caralyn Chewning (Willamina, Ore.), Jantzer and Roth each had two hits in the game.
Sophomore Emma Gronseth (Forest Grove, Ore.) pitched the complete game for UND surrendering three earned runs off four hits and two walks while picking up one strikeout.
UND's next action will come in the Great West Conference Early Tournament held next Friday-Sunday.
