GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Senior forward
Matt Frattin was named the recipient of the Jeff Anderson Hockey Scholarship as North Dakota's Most Valuable Player, highlighting UND's 2010-11 team awards announced this week.
Frattin was also the recipient of the inaugural Virg Foss 3-Star Award, given to the player who receives the most 3-star voting points as voted upon by the print media following home games. The Edmonton, Alberta, native led the NCAA with 36 goals — the most by a Fighting Sioux since 1990-91 — and finished second in the national scoring race with 60 points. He was one of three "Hobey Hat Trick" finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, and was also named a first-team All-American, the College Hockey News National Player of the Year and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Player of the Year.
UND's other team award winners included:
Rookie of the Year: Derek Forbort, Defenseman
- Appeared in 38 games and led all Sioux freshmen with 15 assists
- Also led all Sioux freshmen with a +22 rating
- Won a bronze medal with the United States at the IIHF World Junior Championship
Most Improved Player: Aaron Dell, Sophomore, Goalie
- AHCA All-America first team, Inside College Hockey Goaltender of the Year
- WCHA Goaltending Champion
- Won a school-record 30 games with an NCAA-leading 1.79 goals against average and a .924 save percentage
- Registered six shutouts
Coaches' Unsung Hero: Jake Marto, Senior, Defenseman
- Achieved career highs in games played (44), points (19) and goals (eight)
- Played 13 games at forward in the second half due to injuries in the Sioux lineup
- Tied UND single-season record for defensemen with three game-winning goals
Plus/Minus Award: Ben Blood, Junior, Defenseman
- Led the NCAA with a +33 rating
- Appeared in all 44 games and had two goals and 10 assists
Cliff "Fido" Purpur Award: Evan Trupp, Senior, Forward
- Award is given to the player who exemplifies hard work, determination and being a creator of excitement on the ice
- Played in all 44 games and had career highs in points (41), goals (17) and assists (24)
Archie Krum Memorial Athletic Scholarship: Chay Genoway, Senior, Defenseman & Derrick LaPoint, Senior, Defenseman
- Award is given to the player(s) who demonstrates leadership qualities, high academic standards, athletic excellence
- Fourth straight year Genoway has won at least a share of the award
- Genoway served as team captain and was named a first-team All-American and the WCHA Most Outstanding Student-Athlete
- LaPoint served as an assistant captain and had two goals and eight assists in 43 games
Tom Hoghaug Memorial Scholarship: Brock Nelson, Freshman, Forward
- Given to the freshman who demonstrates initiative, character and a sense of responsibility
- Appeared in 42 games and led all Sioux freshmen in points (21) and goals (eight)
