UND powers past South Dakota on Senior Day

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota women's swimming and diving team closed out the regular season with a 188-111 win over South Dakota at the Hyslop pool on Senior Day. UND finished with two relay titles and 12 individual titles, including two from senior Caitlin Conci.

"It was a good meet overall," head coach Steve Parsons said. "We were very happy with how we came back and swam today. The big thing for us now will be to prepare for our conference meets."

The 200 medley relay 'A' team of junior Veronica Medon (Huntsville, Ontario), senior Kara Fisher (Fergus Falls, Minn.), senior Cailin Conci (Craig, Colo.), and freshman Rachel Wessman (Fargo, N.D.) clocked in with a winning time of 1:48.57. The 'B' team of freshman Erin Grabanski (Grand Forks, N.D.), sophomore Camille Merwin (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), sophomore Alyssa Bailey, and senior Samantha Simon (Barrington, Ill.) finished second with a time of 1:50.79.

UND also picked up a win in the 200 free relay as the 'A' team of sophomore Kelsey Richels (Wahpeton, N.D.), Fisher, Wessman, sophomore Sami Puk (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished with a time of 1:38.18.

Three swimmers finished with a pair of individual titles.

Conci won both the 200 fly (2:10.98) and the 100 fly (58.56), Richels took first in the 100 free (52.69) and the 500 free (5:13.48), and Medon touched first in the 200 back (2:05.61) and the 400 IM (4:35.14).

Also with first-place finishes was sophomore Morgan Lynch (Elk River, Minn.) in the 1,000 free (10:32.57), Fisher in the 200 free (1:57.23), and Grabanski in the 100 back (1:00.35).

Merwin took second in both the 100 breast (1:09.60) and the 200 breast (2:29.10), and Wessman touched second in the 50 free (24.33).

"On the boards, our divers are doing extremely well," Parsons said. "We have a few that are still improving and then others are really just putting on the finishing touches."

On the boards, sophomore Rachel Waldbillig (Circle Pines, Minn.) led a 1-2-3 finish for UND on the 3-meter with a score of 251.25. senior Megan Keidel (Bismarck, N.D.) finished second? (245.50) and freshman Cassidy Tangeman (Shakopee, Minn.) placed third (223.85).

Keidel won the 1-meter with a score of 262.30. She was followed by freshman Jennifer Anklan (Rochester, Minn.) in second place (225.95) and Thomsen in third (213.15).

North Dakota will wrap up the season in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 22-25 at the 2011-12 WAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
