WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore
Alex Hickel was the runner-up in the javelin throw today, highlighting the first day of the indoor season for the University of North Dakota men's track and field team.
Hickel, a native of Grand Forks, posted a throw of 178 feet, 9 inches and was one of two Sioux to score in the event. Fellow sophomore Jakob Bissell (Plymouth, N.H.) placed sixth with a throw of 161 feet, 11 inches.
UND sits in second place after the first of two days of competition.
In the hammer throw, sophomore Roman Waldera (Minot, N.D.) and senior Brandon Quesenberry (Billings, Mont.) placed third and fifth, respectively. Waldera logged a personal-record throw of 154 feet, 11 inches, while Quesenberry checked in at 149 feet, 2 inches.
UND also got a pair of sixth-place showings from freshman Mark Harries (Plymouth, Minn.) and junior Bryant Halvorson (Rugby, N.D.). Harries took sixth in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15 minutes, 27.21 seconds, while Halvorson was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 6 inches.
The UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational concludes on Saturday.
