Track and Field Tallies 29 Top-Five Finishes in California

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – North Dakota track and field closed the opening weekend of outdoor competition in convincing fashion, collecting 29 top-five finishes, including five individual crowns, out at the PLNU Sean Lion Invite on Saturday.
 
It all began with results from Friday night's women's hammer throw being posted, naming Kaylynn Red Tomahawk runner-up of the event with her mark of 177-8 (54.15m). Cailey Moton (169-6, 51.68m) followed in fourth and Julia Matthews (165-8, 50.50m) took fifth.
 
Ava Phrakonkham raced to victory in the women's 100-meter dash, clocking an 11.94 for the top finish and the fourth-best time in school history. Gretchen Raney finished close behind in third place with her time of 12.12 that tied for seventh all-time.
 
A clocking of 14.68 was good enough for fifth-place and the ninth-best mark in school history as Ryan Lange made his event debut in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Nearby, Marta Marksa raced her way to the top of the podium in the women's 100-meter hurdles with her speedy time of 13.83 to take the event crown. Marksa also added in another crown in the women's 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line first in 1:00.52.
 
In the women's 200-meter dash, Phrakonkham collected another UND Top-10 finish with her time of 24.94 to take second place and sit ninth in school history.
 
UND's track domination continued in the women's 800-meter run, where Brooklyn Brouse won the event with her time of 2:12.27. Gabriella Ruggeri ran a 2:13.61 for third place and Mya Phippen rounded out the top-five with her clocking of 2:16.22 for fifth place.
 
All three competing Fighting Hawks placed in the top four of the men's 1500-meter run, featuring Till Woldrich as champion in 3:55.96. Henrik Lindstrot took runner-up in 3:57.24 as Darby Griffin ran a 4:02.50 for fourth place. In the women's half of the event, Ruggeri clocked a 4:40.54 to take third place in her event debut.
 
In the men's high jump, Sawyer Nelson finished as runner-up with his mark of 6-4 3/4 (1.95m), which now sits ninth in the UND record books. Anya Williams also claimed second place in the women's portion of the event with her personal-best mark of 5-7 (1.70m) that ties for eighth all-time. Tiffanie Magnusson joined her in the top-five with her height of 5-3 (1.60m).
 
That same women's pair collected a pair of top-five finishes in the long jump, with Magnusson taking home the runner-up placing after her leap of 18-7 (5.66m) while Williams (18-5 1/4, 5.62m, PR) finished fourth. Shane Zierden and Nelson finished back-to-back in the men's event finals, taking seventh (21-0, 6.40m) and eighth (20-9, 6.34m, PR), respectively.
 
Williams went on to leap her way into third place of the women's triple jump finals with her personal-best mark of 39-1 (11.91m) that now sits fourth in school history.
 
Emily Ash claimed runner-up in the women's pole vault with her mark of 12-0 1/2 (3.67m) while Carter Byron qualified for the men's javelin throw finals and finished eighth overall with his mark of 167-6 (51.07m).
 
In the men's shot put, two UND athletes qualified for the event finals, led by Tyler Thoreson (53-7 1/2, 16.34m) in fourth place and Boaz Raderschadt (50-4, 15.34m) in ninth place. Two Fighting Hawks also qualified for the women's finals, with Matthews (46-4 1/4, 14/13m, eighth all-time) taking second and Haidyn Skeen (43-5 1/4, 13.24m) finishing ninth.
 
All three Fighting Hawks made the finals of the women's discus throw, led by Skeen's fourth-place finish (143-2, 43.65m, PR). Moton (135-6, 41.31m) came fifth and Ilaria Villa (131-0, 39.93m) was sixth.
 
The team of Cruz Megazzini, Dash Ohlsen, Max Roller and Neil clocked a 41.61 to take third place overall in the men's 4x100-meter relay and now sit fifth all-time at UND. Meanwhile, the women's squad of Phrakonkham, Salou, Raney and Williams teamed up to take second place in a time of 47.43, which now sits fourth in UND history.
 
In the women's 4x400-meter relay, Ruggeri, Brouse, Phippen and Raney clocked a time of 3:52.38 to finish as runners-up.
 
Competition resumes tomorrow at the PLNU Sea Lion Invitational at 11 a.m. on the field and 1:30 p.m. on the track out in California.
