TOWSON, Md.-- Emily Evers recorded team highs with 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead North Dakota past host Towson, 54-52, in the Preseason WNIT consolation round Saturday.
"Four games in eight days in three time zones sounds like the sequel to "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". I'm very proud of how we played and responded to the challenge of playing in the Preseason WNIT," UND head coach Travis Brewster said. "This team is the first to get a win in a Division I national tournament format other than hockey. It's really special because the same team made history again by getting a second win. Time to get some rest and regroup."
Evers' effort came after she did not find the score sheet for the first time in her career in Friday's win (94 career games). She responded by hitting 8-of-9 from the floor Saturday and adding a pair of blocks, an assist and a steal.
It was a tight contest with neither team enjoying a lead larger than six. The score was tied on 10 occasions and the lead changed hands 10 times as well in the finale of the tournament.
Makailah Dyer hit three first-half triples to give UND the early edge at 20-15 to force a Tiger timeout. Out of that break, Towson (1-2) scored nine straight points to take its largest lead at four, 24-20. Evers and Leah Szabla each got buckets for North Dakota leading into the break and it was all square at 28 at halftime.
With the score at 37-37, UND embarked on a 6-0 spurt with free throws by Bailey Strand and Kelsey Knox book-ending an Evers layup for a 43-37 edge midway through the second stanza. Towson ripped off the next six points but could never completely get over the hump despite tying it three more times down the stretch.
North Dakota led 51-47 with under three minutes to go. LaTorii Hines-Allen scored two of her game-high 22 points to trim it to a bucket then Ciara Webb was fouled in the act of a three to attempt to give her team the lead. She made the front two and missed the third with Mia Loyd skying to retrieve one of her 11 rebounds. Loyd would collect another offensive rebound on the ensuing possession, mopping up a missed three for a putback and a 53-51 UND edge.
Szabla would later hit the front half of a one-and-one with 3.9 seconds left to all but seal it. Szabla finished the night with five assists and four rebounds.
UND will hit the road again next week, traveling to Omaha for a Wednesday matinee. The game is slated for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
