CLEMSON, S.C.-- Host Clemson closed the game with 14 of the game's final 16 points to help erase a 13-point North Dakota lead for a 72-67 non-conference win Saturday evening at Littejohn Coliseum. The Tigers improved to 5-0 at home this season by launching from the perimeter, shooting a school-record 31 three-point attempts.
Junior Mia Loyd had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead all players, for her sixth double-double of the season. Senior Megan Lauck poured-in 14 first-half points en route to 16 points to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore Makailah Dyer added 15 points for UND.
"Tonight's game was a typical game where we have to play with some discipline and have some composure," UND head coach Travis Brewster said. "Playing not to lose is not a good way to play the game. We have to grow a little bit. We're a young team in some aspects in terms of understanding the flow of the game and how we need to take care of the ball. As a teacher, I have to make them get better and show them why and how so I will have to do better for them. At the same time, you have to play the game together as a team to have success. One thing I can't fault is the team's effort we just have to get better at the technical part of the game."
North Dakota (7-3) led for the bulk of the contest, holding the advantage for more than 32 minutes. After a 7-4 lead for Clemson, UND later got back-to-back threes by Lauck to mount a six-point lead midway through the first half.
The advantage grew to 10 on a pair of Lauck free throws and North Dakota owned a 38-33 edge at thebreak, despite 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. UND out-rebounded the bigger Clemson team, 22-9, in the opening stanza with seven offensive boards.
The Tigers got it within a bucket on a couple different occasions early in the second frame but an 11-0 run, started by Leah Szabla and Loyd buckets, gave the visitors a 13-point cushion. The final score in that stretch was a fastbreak layup by Lauck on a great feed by Dyer in transition to prompt a timeout as the Tigers trailed, 51-38.
Turnaround jumpers on back-to-back trips for North Dakota midway through the second half gave UND a 58-49 lead with 9:42 to play. But, North Dakota would get just two more field goals the rest of the way to help Clemson rally. Siri Burck and Dyer each tripled to help keep Clemson at bay for a bit with a 65-58 lead. From there, Tiffany Lewis hit a three to kickstart the game-ending run and later Daneesha Provo's three gave Clemson its first lead since the opening minutes at 66-65. The Tigers, who shot just one free throw in the first half, made all of its charity stripe tosses in the second half and were able to outdistance North Dakota in the final minute, 72-67.
North Dakota returns home to host Mayville State Tuesday at the Betty with tip slated for 7:00 p.m.
