GRAND FORKS, N.D. – It took a while for North Dakota to get things rolling in its first home game in over a month, but the Green and White eventually settled in to post a 78-48 rout of Dickinson State Friday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
Four UND (4-6) players finished in double figures with Jaron Nash and Estan Tyler leading that quartet with 13 points apiece. Terrel de Rouen added 12, while Josiah Coleman scored 10 off the bench as UND finished shooting a season-high 57.1 percent from the field.
Curtis Redd paced Dickinson State (5-7) with 12 points, while Connor Donaldson chipped in with 10 for the visitors.
Neither team got off to a good start shooting as UND opened just 4-for-14 from the field, while DSU went 3-for-12 in the opening eight minutes to leave the home team holding a slight 8-7 lead.
The Blue Hawks would continue to struggle for the remainder of the half, while UND caught fire to gain control of the contest. DSU would go scoreless over the next six minutes and UND reeled off 11 straight points during that span to build a 19-7 advantage that would not be relinquished.
“Offensively, we got off to a slow start because we were settling for jump shots, but once we started attacking the rim is when we settled in,” UND head coach Brian Jones said. “I liked what we did defensively too, one because we competed from the start and, two, because we were flying around.”
After the slow start, UND would make 11 of its final 16 field goal attempts in the opening stanza to build a 33-13 lead at the half. The Blue Hawks never found a rhythm in those first 20 minutes, making just six field goals on 24 attempts.
Dickinson State played better in the second half, but the 20-point hole was too much to overcome for the NAIA squad as UND would lead by as many as 34 points in the second half. UND also turned DSU over 23 times in the contest and registered 10 steals.
UND went 27-for-39 on field goals inside the arc, while Coleman was the only player to hit multiple 3-pointers, knocking down 3-of-4 for the contest. He is now shooting 60 percent from 3-point range in UND's two home contests.
Nash helped stake UND to a 36-32 edge on the glass, finishing with six boards. He shared team-high honors with Dustin Hobaugh, who had four offensive boards.
UND plays its final Big Sky tune-up on Monday at Marquette. Tipoff from Milwaukee is set for 8 p.m. CT and the game will be televised live on Fox Sports North and Fox Sports Wisconsin.
