DES MOINES, Iowa -- Sophomore Quinton Hooker gave North Dakota its only lead of the game with an acrobatic shot in the paint with only 11.3 seconds to play, lifting his squad to a 63-62 victory over Drake Saturday at the Knapp Center.
Hooker finished with a season-high 16 points, while backcourt mates Terrel de Rouen and Estan Tyler finished with 15 points a piece as UND (3-4) secured its first non-conference road win since beating Longwood late in the 2011-12 season.
The Bulldogs (1-7) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the game, but never led by more than that figure as UND used the remaining 36 minutes to claw its way back.
"We were in a situation like this two weeks ago at South Dakota State and I think our guys learned from that and we ended up on the right end of the scoreboard today," UND head coach Brian Jones said. "We got off to a slow start and could have cashed it in there late when things weren't going our way, but give our guys credit. They made plays down the stretch, got some steals, made some shots and we needed this one for our confidence."
With just over three minutes remaining, Hooker put his team within a point at 57-56 following a steal and layup, but Jordan Daniels answered with four straight points for the Bulldogs to give his team a 61-56 lead with just 2:21 left on the clock.
Drake would miss 3-pointers on its next two possessions, but UND failed to convert at the free throw line, making only one of four down the stretch.
C.J. Rivers would make the front end of a one-and-one opportunity, but missed the back end with 52 seconds to play. Hooker pulled down the defensive board and raced down the floor to cut the deficit to three with a driving layup.
UND forced Drake's 19th turnover of the game on the inbounds pass and after Antwi missed a 3-pointer, Tyler was there for the putback to make it a one-point game at 62-61.
The Bulldogs were then called for a kicking violation and UND got the ball back with 32 seconds to go and the shot clock turned off.
After moving the ball around and taking nearly 20 seconds off the clock, Hooker converted the acrobatic layup after de Rouen cleared the lane with penetration and UND withstood two missed field goals by the Bulldogs in the closing 10 seconds to preserve the win.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor with UND holding a slight 53.2 to 52.3 edge in that department. De Rouen finished 7-for-10 from the floor, Hooker was 7-for-11 and Tyler went 5-for-7 to pace UND, who trailed 29-25 at the break.
Hooker found Jaron Nash on an alley-oop to open the second half and Chad Calcaterra added a turnaround in the paint to tie the score at 29-29, but the Bulldogs would eventually get their lead back to nine at 42-33 just four minutes.
UND would gradually work itself back in the game and get within two at 53-51 following a pair of free throws by Hooker. The visitors would have a chance to tie, but the Bulldogs got a steal and de Rouen was called for a flagrant foult that Drake turned into a four-point possession to push its lead back to 57-51.
That would lead to a frantic final four minutes that saw Tyler knock down a 3-pointer and Hooker get a layup to quickly get back within a point.
UND remains on the road to play at Minnesota for the first time since the 1983 season. Tipoff with the Gophers is set for Monday at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPNU.
