#DayByDay Fall Camp Notebook: No. 15
This and That
The physicality of practices that was evident early in fall camp has taken a back seat these last few days to the mental aspect of the game and Tuesday's final two-a-day of fall camp was no different. There were no live drills during a shortened morning session, which was full-padded and the afternoon session was heavy on mental work as the team went through an 83-play mock game.
"I think we had some guys that had a really good practice this morning and others that were not up to the standard that we expect around here," Schweigert said. "We have to get everybody on board and everybody has to get better every day. That is our expectation. That comes down to how you approach the meetings and the practices. Are you ready to go from start to finish?
"We've shortened the practices up a little bit here because we feel like that is the right thing to do and keep our guys healthy. Mentally, you have to have great energy and focus though."
Depth Chart Coming Wednesday
Head coach Bubba Schweigert plans to announce the two-deep for the San Jose State following Wednesday's practice.
Good and Bad Reviews
Coach Schweigert said following Wednesday morning's practice that there was some room for improvement from guys that he expects to contribute to this football team. He also gave positive reviews on some of his newcomers and a steady group of veterans.
"Overall, I was a little disappointed in some individuals," he said. "We will address that. We want guys out here competing for opportunities and competing for playing time every day.
"That being said, I am real happy with some of the first-year guys. They show a real hunger. We have a lot of new faces and they are working hard, really trying to get better. That is pleasing to see. We have a number of veterans doing the same thing. We got a couple of guys back today that were out a few days and I thought they worked hard to get better today.
"I think Alex Tillman comes to practice every day to work hard. I think Zach Adler and Dwayne Pecosky come to practice to get better. Those are just a few individuals. I think Jordan HInojosa (E-no-Ho-sa) creates some excitement out here.
Disterhaupt Back At Home
After bouncing around from wide receiver to defensive back during his redshirt season in 2013, Jake Disterhaupt is excelling at his new role, which is a familiar one from his high school days.
Disterhaupt moved to outside linebacker following spring drills and so far is making the most of the switch. He has steadily moved up the depth chart and is on the verge of cracking the two-deep.
"I am very comfortable with the position," Disterhaupt said. "I played linebacker in high school, so being lower on the field and in the trenches definitely feels more like home to me."
Disterhaupt's play in fall camp has caught the attention of his head coach too. "I thought Disterhaupt had a good day today," Schweigert said after the morning session. "You can tell he is really working hard to get better. I like his attitude and we need everybody to be buying into this thing like he is."
Disterhaupt, who bulked up about 10 pounds knowing of his impending move, had an interception during team drills to add to his total from fall camp.
Mock Game
After some individual drills and skelly work in the afternoon session, the team went through an 83-play mock game that had just about every scenario in it, ranging from a botched PAT snap to taking a safety on a punt.
"We just wanted to review all the situations, even fake injuries and letting the athletic training staff get used to their routine," Schweigert said. "There are a lot of special situations that come up in a football game and we want our guys to be ready for all of them.
"And, even the basic stuff like getting plays in-and-out, how we are going to sub. I think it is important to do that stuff. I think we'll review one more time, maybe not at the length that we did today, but that is good mental work for our team. We want to have good focus and I thought it helped us today."
Team Picture Day
The annual team picture will be taken tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
