GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Weber State found a way to snap a three-game losing streak by netting a 67-60 victory over North Dakota in Big Sky men's basketball action Thursday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The Wildcats (9-11, 4-5 BSC) led by one at 57-56 with just over three minutes to play in a rematch of last season's Big Sky Tournament title game, but stretched out that advantage with a 6-0 run to secure the win.
Sophomore Jeremy Senglin had the final four points during that pivotal stretch and finished with a game-high 21 points for the Wildcats, who also got 15 from Richaud Gittens.
Estan Tyler led UND (6-13, 2-6 BSC) with 12 points, while Carson Shanks added 11 and Quinton Hooker chipped in with 10. The setback was the fourth straight at home for the Green and White.
“Tonight, it came down to making wide open shots and we just didn't do that,” UND head coach Brian Jones said. “Our offense did its job and we had those looks, but give them credit, they got looks and they made them.
“Again, it came down to those last two or three minutes of the game, probably two or three possessions that decided the game. And, that's the difference between winning and losing for us right now.”
UND got off to a good start as Shanks made two field goals and had an assist in the opening four minutes to get his team off to an 8-2 advantage. The Wildcats quickly fought back though, scoring the next 10 points to take their first lead at 12-8.
The teams would go back-and-forth from there before Weber State broke a 22-22 tie with six straight points. UND would not let the visitors pull away though as Josiah Coleman knocked down the home team's first 3-pointer of the half with just under two minutes to play to pull his squad back within a pair.
The Wildcats would get the final points of the half on a jumper by Joel Bolomboy to make it a 30-26 contest at the break. Senglin led all scorers with 11 first-half points and went 5-for-9 from the field, while the rest of his team went just 7-for-20.
Shanks had seven first-half points for the home team, but UND only shot 39 percent (11-for-28) from the field.
Tyler provided a spark in the second half, scoring his team's first nine points as UND surged ahead by five points.
A dunk by Jaron Nash gave UND another five-point advantage at 41-36, but a 3-pointer by Ryan Richardson and 3-point play by on back-to-back possessions erased that deficit.
The teams would exchange mini-spurts over the next five minutes before Chris Golden squared things up at 47-47 with a 3-pointer from the left wing.
Josiah Coleman, who had eight points off the UND bench, rattled home a corner 3-pointer after the teams traded turnovers to give his squad a 50-47 lead with 8:01 to play. This time it was Senglin who tied the game with a trifecta.
UND would never lead again, but Hooker squared things up one last time at 54-54 with an acrobatic layup. The Wildcats would take the lead for good on a pair of Joel Bolomboy free throws.
Bolomboys freebies were part of a 19-for-21 effort by the visitors, who came in ranked 10th in the NCAA in free throw percentage.
UND was whistled for 14 fouls after halftime and only made it to the line four times in the closing 20 minutes, while WSU converted 16-of-18 attempts after the break and committed just seven fouls after both teams only had five in the first half.
Both teams held their opponent under season averages from the field as Weber State shot only 40 percent and UND finished at a 41-percent clip. Bolomboy led all players with nine rebounds, while Shanks had a career-high eight for UND.
UND plays host to Idaho State in Big Sky play on Saturday at 2 p.m.
