GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota sophomore center Nick Schmaltz has been named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Player of the Month for November, it was announced this afternoon by the conference office.
Schmaltz racked up two goals and 13 assists with a plus-14 rating in eight November games, closing out the month on a seven-game point streak that is the longest of his career. The Verona, Wis., native led the nation in assists and plus/minus during the month, while ranking second in points.
He also paced the country in primary assists (7), even-strength assists (10) and road assists (8). Schmaltz assisted on four game-winning goals in November, which also led the nation, and helped the fourth-ranked Fighting Hawks to a 6-2-0 November record.
Schmaltz led the NCHC in scoring and assists per game (1.62) in November while racking up five multi-point games. He enjoyed a 4-point (1g, 3a) game against No. 17 Miami (Nov. 13) and a 3-assist game at No. 7 St. Cloud State (Nov. 20). In five of his last six games, Schmaltz posted a plus/minus rating of plus-2 or better.
A first-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2014, Schmaltz has two goals and 19 assists in 16 games overall this season, and boasts a NCAA-leading plus-23 rating.
Omaha freshman Evan Weninger was named NCHC Rookie of the Month.
Schmaltz and UND (12-2-2, 5-1-0 NCHC) will host ninth-ranked Denver at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Friday and Saturday.
