GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Putting in terms used to describe the great comedians, the University of North Dakota men's hockey team is king of the one-liners these days.
UND's No. 1 line of senior left wing Drake Caggiula, sophomore center Nick Schmaltz and freshman right wing Brock Boeser dominated center stage again Friday night in UND's 5-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference victory over the visiting Denver Pioneers in front of a sellout of 11,768 fans at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Boeser scored twice, Caggiula had a goal and two assists in reaching 100 in career points, and Schmaltz had a goal for a six-point game as the 'CBS Line' (Caggiula-Boeser-Schmaltz) continued its torrid pace.
The line now has 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points in the last seven games and is a gaudy plus-42 on the plus/minus chart measuring offensive and defensive effectiveness.
In a game featuring fourth-ranked North Dakota (now 6-1-1 in NCHC, 13-2-1 overall) against ninth-ranked Denver (3-1-1 NCHC, 7-4-2 overall), the dominance of UND's top line was the difference.
UND also had a power-play goal from sophomore Austin Poganski, his first goal in 14 games. Denver's lone goal came on a goal-mouth deflection by Pioneer captain Grant Arnold to give DU 1-0 lead at 1:22 of the second period.
But Caggiula answered with a neat toe-drag and wrist shot past a screen 26 seconds later to kill DU's momentum and start UND's rally.
Poganski scored on the power play at 4:33, Boeser went short side high and 7:42 and Boeser and Schmaltz added goals in the third period to round out the impressive win.
UND coach Brad Berry, in his first year as head coach after a long tenuure as an assistant, thought back to when he saw a UND line as hot as the CBS crew.
"My first time coaching here, I think we had Jeff Panzer, (Ryan) Bayda and (Bryan) Lundbohm on a line,'' Berry said. "They were pretty dynamic, too. When you have lines like that, they bring special chemistry. Each one brings a little different offensive ability to the table. What I really like about that line is that they're playing the right way, they're backchecking hard, they're tracking back through the neutral zone. Their plus/minus reflects that.''
The Panzer-Bayda-Lundbohm line was a driving force on UND's national runner-up season of 2000-01.
Boeser showed off the magic the line can bring in an instant. He scored his first goal high to the short side from in tight over the right shoulder of DU goalie Evan Cowley. He sniped his second on a howitzer of a wrist shot just inside the far post and under the crossbar for his second goal, and his 10th of the season.
UND sophomore goalie Cam Johnson (22 saves on 23 shots) in winning his first home start in a UND uniform with a strong outing, practices against the CBS line all week.
"It's unbelievable,'' Johnson said, "They're so fun to watch. They're so talented. They're rippin' it up right now.''
With that in mind, he can throw a good-natured dig at them. "They struggle to score on me in practice,'' Johnson said with a grin.
Replied Caggilula with the same twist of humor: "Cam says a lot of things that aren't true."
Caggiula noted that his line is scoring in a lot of different ways, including a shot by Schmaltz that cracked off the end wall, bounced back out front and hit the rear of DU goalie Cowley before going into the net.
"You can't be a one-dimensional line,'' Caggilula said.
But the jury is still out whether UND can stay among the nation's elite teams with a one line carrying the team offensively.
"It's not always going to come easy,'' Caggiula said. "We can't just go out there and act like it's just going to come and fall into our laps. We have to make sure we work for it. So far we've been doing a good job of that.''
"I thought generally we had four lines going tonight,'' Berry said. "They had some looks and chances. That's encouraging.''
UND sophomore Johnny Simonson hit the post flush on a rebound chance in the third period that would have added more depth to UND's scoring. Earlier, Schmaltz his the goal post on a scoring chance, his seventh post shot in the last four games.
The two teams conclude their series Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
