GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- There's no question that North Dakota's CBS line of senior Drake Caggiula, freshman Brock Boeser and sophomore Nick Schmaltz ranks as an elite combo in the country.
With 19 goals and 23 assists between them in the last eight games, along with a plus-48 ranking, the numbers for the CBS line scream excellence.
They combined for two more goals tonight along with two assists as North Dakota beat Denver University 4-0 in front of a seventh consecutive sellout of 11,842 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Coupled with Friday's 5-1 UND win, the Fighting Hawks now have sole possession of first place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with a 7-1 league record 14-2-2 overall mark.
The CBS line certainly made it presence known. Caggiula bagged his 13th goal of the season and the rookie Boeser his 11th with rocket shots in the third period to cement the victory and wrap up sophomore goalie Cam Johnson's (18 saves) first career shutout.
Caggiula's 13 goals puts him one off the national lead in that cagetory and only five shy of his career single-season high of 18 collected last season.
"They always surprise you,'' UND defenseman Paul LaDue said of the CBS line. "They'll shoot from anywhere and it'll go in. Can't give them too much credit -- they're a cocky bunch.''
It was a dominating performance by UND. The Hawks outshot Denver 37-18, including a smothering first period when UND had a 19-3 shot advantage, its biggest one-period edge this season.
UND attempted 73 shots to just 39 for the Pioneers overall, as UND racked up the first sweep for either team in this series since 2009.
UND, ranked fourth nationally in the polls and checking in at No. 5 after tonight's game in the Pairwise Rankings, completely shut down a dangerous Denver team (3-2-1 NCHC, 7-5-2 overall) that came into the series ranked No. 9 nationally.
"I thought this was probably our best game of the year for a 60-minute game, closing a game out,'' UND head coach Brad Berry said.
UND shined in most every area. Denver had five power plays, but managed just two shots with 10 minutes of time with an extra skater -- and gave up a shorthanded goal to UND sophomore Austin Poganski with six-tenth of a second left in the first period to snap a scoreless tie.
"I didn't know it was that close,'' Poganski said of clock nearly running out before he scored. "I knew we didn't have a lot of time, so I was trying to get on my horse and get down there.''
Poganski notched his second career two-goal game on a power-play deflection at 10:12 of the second period to make it 2-0. He tipped in defenseman Tucker Poolman's one-time rip from the left point for Poganski's fifth goal of the season and third of the weekend.
On his breakaway, he beat the buzzer ending the period when he sailed in alone on Denver goalie Tanner Jaillet (33 saves), then made a quick deke to his backhand to flip his shot past Jaillet.
That set up the sweep to come.
"Any time you can get two wins against a quality team like Denver, which is very good in college hockey every year, we're very happy,'' Berry said.
Poganski, who is more noted for camping in front of the net and taking a beating to score on deflections, showed off his favorite move on his backhander on the breakaway.
"I've seen that time and time again,'' Berry said. "We do Thursday shootouts all the time, and that's his go-to move. Even though the goaltenders know it's coming, he seems to execute it all the time. That's a tough play, especially at the end of the period, the way the ice is.''\
Johnson wasn't tested a whole lot, but he stopped everything he saw in running his record as a starter to 5-0-1. "It's nice to have depth at every position,'' Berry said. "I think we have it right now.''
Winning a pair of games by four-goal margins against a quality opponent surprised some UND players a bit. "It's always a great rivalry, and we expect really tight games against them,''
Poganski said. "I think it just shows how strong our team is and how focused we were this weekend.''
