PEORIA, Ill. – Reserve guard Corey Baldwin scored all of his season-high 20 points after halftime to help North Dakota defeat Bradley 65-59 in double overtime Saturday at Carver Arena. The Fighting Hawks (4-4) overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 10 minutes to force the extra sessions and beat the Braves for the first time in series history.
Bradley (1-8) led 41-31 after an 8-0 run midway through the second half, but Baldwin willed his team back to force the extra sessions. He sparked an 11-0 run to put UND back in the lead and junior Quinton Hooker added 18 points for the visitors, who have won two of their last three against Missouri Valley Conference foes.
“Corey Baldwin came in and gave us a huge lift and that was the spark we needed,” UND head coach Brian Jones said. “We got down 10 and he hit a big 3-pointer and got a transition layup to get us right back in it.”
After the teams only scored two points each in the first overtime, UND got its offense going in the second extra session to outscore the Braves 16-10. Hooker had eight of those points for the visitors as he reached double figures for the eighth-straight game.
Neither team shot the ball well from the field or the free throw line. UND finished with a 32 percent clip and the Braves shot only 37 percent, but UND managed to make 19 free throws on 36 attempts, while Bradley sunk just nine of 22 tries.
Hooker had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his 3-pointer from the top of the key went strong. It was Bradley's turn to take a crack at winning at the end of the first overtime session, but the Braves could not get a shot off in time with only 1.1 seconds to work with after Hooker nearly got a steal.
Geno Crandall kept UND in the game early, scoring six of the team's first eight points, but he was limited to just nine first-half minutes after picking up two quick fouls. He finished with nine points, four steals and a team-high five assists.
Ronnie Suggs provided the Braves with a 21-20 lead at halftime with a mid-range jumper with just over a minute to play in the stanza. Bradley made four of their last five field goals after starting 3-for-14.
The Fighting Hawks shot only 29 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and connected on 3-of-8 free throws. The visitors scored 14 of their 20 points off of 14 first-half turnovers by the Braves.
UND returns to action on Friday against rival North Dakota State in a tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on the Fighting Hawks' home court at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
