FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Everything went right for North Dakota on Thursday night as the Fighting Hawks rolled to a 101-59 victory over Northern Arizona in Big Sky men's basketball play.
UND (9-9, 4-3 BSC) started the game on a 12-0 run and never looked back as the 42-point victory marked the largest win over a Division I opponent since moving to that level prior to the 2008-09 season. The Lumberjacks (3-14, 1-5 BSC) dropped their third straight.
Junior Corey Baldwin led all scorers with 22 points to equal his career-high and had a trio of 3-pointers in that opening spurt that set the tone for the game. UND finished shooting a season-high 61 percent from the floor and buried a season-high 14 treys on 26 attempts (53.8 percent).
“It started with our defense and, obviously, we shot the ball at a high level,” UND head coach Brian Jones said. “Corey Baldwin really set the tone for us and got some rhythm shots to fall there early in the first half.”
Baldwin, who finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, was one of six Fighting Hawks to reach double figures, which marked the first time in DI history that UND had a half-dozen players score 10 or more points in a game.
Junior Quinton Hooker finished with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while sophomore Drick Bernstine posted his fourth double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Bernstine's effort on the glass helped UND own a 41-28 edge in that category.
Rounding out UND's six double-figure scorers were reserves Cortez Seales (13), Adam McDermott (12) and Conner Avants (10). Seales and McDermott both accounted for nine of their points in the second half, while Avants had all 10 of his in the first half.
McDermott hit UND's eighth triple of the first half as the horn sounded to give UND a 46-25 edge at the break and the hot shooting did not end there.
The Fighting Hawks shot 70 percent from the floor in the second half, going 21-for-30 and led by as many as 43 points in this one. Kris Yanku led NAU with 17 points, but the Lumberjacks finished with just a 38-percent clip from the floor and could never find a rhythm.
Hooker had a game-high eight assists and UND finished with 24 on 39 made field goals. The double-figure scoring game was his 23rd-straight dating back to last season.
UND will look for a Big Sky road sweep on Saturday with a game at Southern Utah. Tip-off from Cedar City is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. CT.
