Grand Forks, N.D. -- Junior Drick Bernstine registered a triple-double and was one of seven Fighting Hawks in double figures as North Dakota rolled to a 101-63 victory over Presentation College Sunday at the Betty Englestad Sioux Center.
Bernstine finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and got his 10th assist on a made 3-pointer by
Corey Baldwin midway through the second half to join his teammate
Quinton Hooker as the only two Fighting Hawks in program history to record the elusive stat line.
"Drick's a unique player," UND head coach
Brian Jones said. "He's definitely a facilitating forward and utility type guy and having 10 assists on one turnover is quite a stat line. I think it just shows you his ability and how he needs to play if we want to be the team we think we can be."
The Saints (2-3) kept things close early as Elijah Valdez had 10 quick points to put his team up 16-15 at the 11:38 mark, but UND (3-0) would take control of the contest with an 11-1 run and start a season 3-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign.
Sophomore
Conner Avants had six of his season-high 15 points during that first-half spurt and finished 7-of-9 from the floor. Classmate
Geno Crandall added a game-high 17 points with 15 of those coming in the first half.
Crandall's efforts helped give the home team a 53-34 advantage at the break. Both he and Baldwin, who also added 15 points, shot 6-for-9 from the floor as UND scored 90-plus points in the third straight game for the first time since 1993-94.
Hooker added 10 points on a 4-of-4 shooting from the floor and reserves
Josh Collins and
Billy Brown reached that figure too, joining UND's five starters in double figures.
Collins put UND over the century mark in the closing seconds with a fast-break layup as UND has now shot 50 percent of better from the floor in all three victories this season.
Valdez finished with a game-high 14 points for the Saints as the NAIA program played their third and final exhibition game of the season.
This was the opening game of the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic for UND that multi-team event will resume on Friday in Dayton, Ohio with the Fighting Hawks taking on North Florida at 3:30 p.m. CT. The contest with the Ospreys will be the first of three games in three days for UND on Wright State's home court.
