GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota freshman forward Tyson Jost has been named to the final 22-player roster that will represent Canada at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship, which begins Dec. 26 in Toronto and Montreal.
A first-round draft pick (10th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche last summer, Jost is the first UND player to represent Canada at the World Junior Championship since Jonathan Toews won back to back gold medals in 2006 and 2007.
Others who have suited up for Canada at the tournament have included Brad Bombardir (1992), Greg Johnson (1991), Jason Herter (1990), Geoff Smith (1989), current UND head coach Brad Berry (1985), Gord Sherven (1983), James Patrick (1982, 1983) and Troy Murray (1982). Like Toews, Johnson, Herter, Berry, Patrick, and Murray were all gold medalists.
Jost captained Team Canada at the 2016 World Under-18 Hockey Championship in Grand Forks, when he set a new Canadian scoring record with 15 points in seven games. He led the tournament in scoring and was named its Top Forward. He also won a gold medal with Canada at the 2015 World Junior 'A' Challenge.
Through his first 17 games at UND, Jost leads the NCHC rookie scoring race with 18 points (7 goals, 11 assists). He also tops all freshmen in plus/minus (+11) and shots on goal (55) and leads the NCHC in faceoff percentage (63.5).
