GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Former University of North Dakota defenseman, assistant coach and head coach Bill Selman was named the 2016 Legend of College Hockey recipient today by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation.

Selman was a three-year letterwinner on defense for North Dakota from 1960-61 to 1962-63, appearing in 72 career games and collecting one goal and 20 assists. The Fort Frances, Ontario, native was a senior on UND's 1962-63 team that won the program's second NCAA and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) championships.

After graduating in 1963, Selman returned to his alma mater in 1964-65 as an assistant coach and helped guide UND to another WCHA championship. He spent one more season as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach for the 1966-67 and 1967-68 seasons, leading the Fighting Sioux to two more WCHA titles. In all, UND won four conference titles and one national championship in Selman's seven seasons with the program.

Selman's collegiate coaching career also included head-coaching stints at Minnesota Duluth (1968-70), St. Louis University (1970-79) and Lake Superior State (1981-83). He amassed a career record of 277-217-21 (.558).
