GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota hockey program will recognize its 1958-59 NCAA championship team Saturday, which won the first of the program's eight national titles.
North Dakota wore the 1958-59 replica jerseys during its Dec. 29 exhibition game against the United States Under-18 Team at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The jerseys will then be sold at the
UND Champions Ball on April 27th.
The 1958-59 team will be recognized during an on-ice intermission ceremony during the Jan. 12 contest against Colorado College, with members of that championship squad in attendance. The team has several appearances on the docket for this weekend to include:
Friday- UND Booster Luncheon and bus tour of Grand Forks and UND
Saturday- Tour of UND locker room, team photo, pre-game reception, on-ice recognition and TV/radio interviews
North Dakota, then the Fighting Sioux, went 20-10-1 under second-year head coach Bob May and defeated Michigan State 4-3 in overtime in the title game at RPI Fieldhouse in Troy, N.Y. Forward Reggie Morelli scored the overtime game-winner and was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Ed Thomlinson (first team), Ralph "Trucker" Lyndon (second team) and Joe Poole (second team).
Defenseman Bill Steenson captained the 1958-59 squad and earned his third straight all-America honor that season.
