GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota hockey team will welcome back one of its former captains and most revered players in program history on Friday, Nov. 2 when Jim Archibald takes the ice during the introduction of starting lineups against the University of Wisconsin.
The idea to bring back UND hockey alumni and connect them with the current team was something North Dakota head coach
Brad Berry wanted to do for his current players and the fans.
"Jim is one the icons of North Dakota hockey who helped build our tradition and history. He left an impact on our program and we're excited to welcome him back," said Berry.
Archibald played for UND from 1981-82 to 1982-85 and helped the Fighting Sioux capture their fourth national championship in 1982. During his senior season in 1984-85, Archibald was named a co-captain and led the team in goals (37) and points (61) while being named to the All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) First Team. He finished his collegiate career with 75 goals and 144 points in 154 career games and holds the program records for single-season penalties (81), single-season penalty minutes (197), career penalties (247) and career penalty minutes (540).
After his UND career, Archibald went on to play for the Minnesota North Stars in the NHL before retiring from hockey in 1988.
Archibald will be introduced during a special pre-game ceremony on Friday in which he will take the ice during starting lineups and will remain on the blue line with the team during the national anthem. In the future, the UND hockey program will honor two former players over the course of the season by inviting them to dress in uniform and be announced during starting lineups.
Tickets for the game on Nov. 2 against Wisconsin are available at Ticketmaster.com, the Ralph Engelstad Arena Box Office or by phone at 800.745.3000.
