Fighting Hawks back in win column with victory over UAA

Freshman Keane's first career goal stands as winner

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Like a seasoned short-order cook, the University of North Dakota hockey team served up some goodness in quick fashion to the 11,155 fans at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Friday night.

UND needed just 49 seconds after three Alaska Anchorage penalties to score goals and take a 5-2 nonconference victory over the Seawolves, snapping a 3-game losing streak in the process.

Here's how that was done:

* Just 13 seconds after UND's Joel Janatuinen hit the post on a penalty shot after he was hauled down from behind on a breakaway, junior Ludvig Hoff knocked in a Cole Smith centering pass. That goal at 4:42 of the opening period staked UND to a 1-0 lead after one period and a 15-2 shot advantage. It was the second goal of the season for Hoff, who has missed the last four games with an injury.

*Seven seconds after an Anchorage penalty for too many men on the ice, sophomore Grant Mismash found net on his wrist shot at 4:36 of the second period for a 2-0 lead, the fourth goal of the season for Mismash.

*And 29 seconds after a high-sticking penalty on Anchorage, senior center Rhett Gardner tipped in a Mismash pass at 11:50 of the second period for a 4-1 lead. It was the team-best sixth goal of the season for Gardner.

Coming off getting swept at home by Western Michigan last weekend, UND came out better in every phase of the game this night.

"I thought we came out strong after a hard week of practice,'' UND coach Brad Berry said. "Good energy level. I thought we did a lot of the details we needed to do.''

An example of that, cited by Berry, is that the goals by Mismash and Gardner came after offensive faceoff wins, a department UND lost against Western Michigan.

For two teams struggling to find offense this season, UND found it more often, and not just from the usual weapons.

Junior Casey Johnson scored just his second goal in 67 career games, his other coming last season in an overtime road win at Anchorage. And freshman Jackson Keane made his presence known with a nifty toe-drag move around a defenseman to score his first college goal.

All Anchorage had to offer offensively were goals by seniors Nicolas Erb-Ekholm and Nils Nygaard, both from Sweden. Still, they doubled the Seawolves' season average of a goal a game, worst in the nation.

The two Anchorage Swedes were part of unofficial all-nation night at the Ralph as Hoff (Norway, a goal), and Anchorage's Tomi Hiekkavirta (Finland, assist) joined players from Canada and the U.S. on the scoresheet. The only import who didn't hit the scoresheet was Anchorage defenseman David Trinkberger, from Germany.

The victory for UND (6-5-1 overall) was its first in the last five Black Friday games at home (now 1-3-1). Anchorage fell to 1-9-1 overall with just three wins (3-28-4) in 35 games against UND in Grand Forks.

After scoring just two goals over two games against Western Michigan and playing more as individuals at times in a 6-2 loss last Saturday, UND reversed course against Anchorage. "The message was whatever it takes to stay with it,'' Berry said. "And no frustration, no bickering. Making sure we stay with what we do, and have a resolve to it.''

The formula worked as UND outshot the Seawolves 39-22, but far more importantly, scored five times after coming into the game averaging 2.5 goals per game.

"We had a real hard work week and kind of sharpened up on some details,'' Gardner said.

And as a result, the Fighting Hawks put the Black Friday hex to rest.

Keane, seeing action in only his third game of the season, impressed with his four shots on net, and his big-time move to work his way to the net for his first college goal.

While the move worked, Keane couldn't describe it. "It's pretty cool, I don't really have words to describe it,''Keane said of scoring his goal. "It's something I've dreamed about for a long time. I was just happy to get in the lineup tonight.''

And his move on his goal? "I kind of just blacked out, I think,'' Keane said. "I saw him (defenseman) slide down and and I was going to pass it. I couldn't really tell you what happened after that.''

Game notes: Hoff, coming off the injury list and dressed as the extra skater under NCAA rules this season, led UND in shots on goal with 5 in limited ice time, followed by Keane with 4 . . . The victory was Thome's first of the season . . . Mismash, Gardner and Keane were named the game's three stars by the media, in that order . . . UND won the faceoffs 40-25, led by Gardner's dominating 23-6 mark . . . UND was 2-3 on the power play with 4 shots, Anchorage 1-4 with 3 shots.
