Fall Camp Notebook: Vol. 2

GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Day two of Fall camp for UND football saw another energetic practice, building on momentum from the highly-anticipated opening of camp yesterday. Following Thursday's practice, head coach Bubba Schweigert stressed the importance of following up on the opening-day hype with another enthusiastic practice Friday. That certainly seemed to the case as the team got more solid work in on day two in its journey towards the season opener on Aug. 30.

The story going into the season will continue to revolve around the quarterback competition with all three front-runners (Brock Boltmann, Nate Ketteringham, Andrew Zimmerman) aiming to get a leg up. While today's session was another without pads and in helmets and shorts, some standout moments popped up.

"Our quarterbacks threw the ball better today, always good to see improvement," Schweigert said. "We ran the two-minute drill and it was more efficient today. It's in helmets-only, so it's not real live-- but we want to get better and we took a step forward there. Saw some good things there. We threw some deep balls today-- you've got to eliminate those and you don't want to give up those big plays, so we address those and hopefully the next time you come out you improve.

"It's always important that our guys finish a practice strong and go get a good workout and to keep learn and keep pushing to get better. Momentum is a good word to use, you've got to have momentum from one practice to one meeting to the next."

SOME OBSERVATIONS
*The "turnover dunk", in which a defensive player that gets a turnover, can fire it into what has been termed the "Ball Hawk"-- a receptacle that roams the sideline, adorned in Kelly green and UND logos. Read more about it here (Grand Forks Herald).
*Special teams got some reps in early with Cam McKinney highlighting a shifty return and preseason All-America returner John Santiago doing what he does, eluding tacklers.
*Tank Harris grabbed the first turnover of the session with a "Go dunk it!" outcry from the defensive sideline.
*Later in 7-on-7s, Harris was the back half of two straight interceptions, with the first from Lenny Nelson IV.
*On those long pass plays discussed earlier, Zimmerman fired a long strike to Izzy Adeoti for a long score.
*Boltmann engineered a long scoring drive, punctuated by a Garett Maag touchdown catch and goal-post dunk.
*The team practices again Saturday, this time with half pads. First full-pads practice comes Tuesday, Aug. 7.
