Fighting Hawks tame Dolphins, 3-1, in Jacksonville

UND moves back to .500 with victory; travels to Tampa for USF Classic on Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Head Coach Mark Pryor didn't want to call today's match a must-win; however, the Fighting Hawks delivered with a resounding 3-1 victory over Jacksonville on Tuesday evening.

"A win is a win, and this group really needed it," said Pryor. "They are discovering that being successful isn't a sometimes thing. It's 24/7."

After dropping a tough five set match to North Florida just 24 hours prior, UND (6-6) rallied back in strong fashion by hitting .276 for the match and forcing 24 attack errors by the Dolphins (1-8) to pick up a four-set victory.

"We were much more disciplined tonight and that made the game easier for us," said Pryor on his team, who only committed 13 attack errors on the night.

Kayla Williams continued to pace the Fighting Hawks on both sides of the ball, recording her eighth double-double of the young season. The junior tallied 12 kills to lead the team while also adding 12 digs and a solo block.

Jordan Vail also reached double figures in kills with 10. The San Antonio native chipped in a trio of block assists along with a solo rejection to help the Hawks post five blocks on the night.

Starting at the libero position, Taliyah Flores matched a game-high 16 digs while also adding an assist on the set-clinching point in the second frame.

The Hawks came out swinging to begin the match, building an early 11-5 lead and never looking back as the visitors hit a whopping .500 for the set to cruise to a 25-17 victory. UND led wire-to-wire in the opening frame, as five of the team's starters recorded a kill in the stanza.

In the second, the sides traded points for a majority of the frame until the Dolphins finally strung consecutive points together to build a 16-13 lead and force a UND timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Hawks responded with five of the next seven tallies to even the match up at 19. UND forced a pair of errors, received a service ace from Roosa Rautio, and kills from Ashely Brueggeman and Williams to help orchestrate the comeback.

The green and white rolled from there, forcing another trio of Dolphin errors followed by an ace from Maggie Smith to extend the lead to 23-19 and force a timeout from the home side. UND put the final touches on a second set victory when Rautio executed a dump kill over the net for a 25-21 triumph and a 2-0 match lead.

Jacksonville used a late run in the third set to break open a 13-13 tie and extend the match into a fourth period with a 25-20 victory. UND once again was tasked with facing adversity in closing out a match, something the squad dealt with just 24 hours ago against North Florida.

Holding a similar 2-1 match lead and a 12-11 advantage in the fourth set, UND exploded for a 7-1 run to give the visitors some breathing room and a 19-12 lead. Lydia Rutten slammed home with a kill before Vail and Brueggeman added points with back-to-back kills to get the run started. Then, the defense got involved by forcing three straight errors from Jacksonville to put an exclamation point on the spurt.

The Dolphins climbed back into the set, trimming the deficit down to 23-21, but the Hawks answered the adversity with a final kill from Brueggeman and another forced attack error to seal the win.

North Dakota will head down the state of Florida to Tampa for a weekend tournament hosted by USF. The Fighting Hawks will battle the host Bulls and Charlotte on Friday before closing the long road trip with New Orleans on Saturday.
