HONORING OUR FIRST TITLE TEAM
UND will be welcoming back the 1958-59 team on their 60th anniversary of the school's first-ever NCAA championship. North Dakota, then the Fighting Sioux, went 20-10-1 under second-year head coach Bob May and defeated Michigan State 4-3 in overtime in the title game at RPI Fieldhouse in Troy, N.Y. Forward Reggie Morelli scored the overtime game-winner and was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Ed Thomlinson (first team), Ralph "Trucker" Lyndon (second team) and Joe Poole (second team). Defenseman Bill Steenson captained the 1958-59 squad and earned his third straight all-America honor that season.
COLORADO COLLEGE COACHING STAFF
Mike Haviland is in his fifth season at the helm of Colorado College. He owns a 43-106-15 mark in his time as the Tiger bench boss. His teams have seen its win totals increase year-to-year, starting with six wins in year one and a 15-win campaign last season.
SERIES HISTORY
North Dakota owns a 157-83-11 all-time mark against Colorado College, including a sparkling 101-22-7 mark at home.
ABOUT COLORADO COLLEGE
The Tigers are 8-10-2 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play heading into this weekend. CC last played Jan. 2 at Maine, dropping a 4-2 decision two days after a 5-1 win at Merrimack.
Five players have at least 12 points on the season, including four seniors. The squad is led by Westin Michaud's 14 points (6-8--14).
This week, Colorado College captured two of the three monthly awards for December by the NCHC as senior Trevor Gooch and freshman Ben Copeland were named Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month, respectively.
Gooch closed out 2018 in strong fashion, leading the NCHC with both five goals and seven points in December to help the Tigers to a 3-3-0 record during the month. His five tallies, including one game-winner, also tied for fifth nationally in December, one off the NCAA lead.
Copeland, meanwhile, more than doubled his season points total in December, racking up five points in six games to lead all NCHC rookies in scoring during the month. He notched two goals, one of only two NCHC rookies to do so in December (along with teammate Grant Cruikshank), while adding three assists. Copeland's 0.83 points per game also led all NCHC rookies with more than one game in December, while his five points tied for third among all NCHC skaters in the final month of 2018 and tied for fourth nationally among rookies.
LAST MEETINGS BETWEEN THESE TEAMS:
UND and Colorado College split the season series last year with each team grabbing a road win.
Grant Mismash and
Joel Janatuinen each had a pair of goals in UND's wins on Dec. 28 and Feb. 10, respectively.
POLL POSITION
UND is receiving votes in the Jan. 7th USCHO.com poll (would be 21st). North Dakota did not appear in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls that were also released on Monday.
LAST SERIES
North Dakota suffered a non-conference sweep at the hands of Canisius last week. The Golden Griffins were able to break 1-1 ties early in the third period on both nights en route to their first-ever wins over UND (2-7-0).
POOLMAN OR IRON MAN?
Junior captain
Colton Poolman (East Grand Forks, Minn.) has never missed a collegiate game in his career, having played in all 99 of UND's games since he arrived on campus.
Poolman is closing in on becoming the fourth active Fighting Hawk to reach the 100-games milestone for his career. He would join seniors
Rhett Gardner (129 games),
Joel Janatuinen (120) and
Hayden Shaw (117). Poolman has four goals and four assists through 19 games this season.
HEY, WE KNOW THEM
Colorado College has some North Dakota connections on its roster. Former UND forward Chris Wilkie is in his junior season at CC after transferring following the 2016-2017 season. CC's volunteer assistant is UND alum Tate Maris, who was a reserve goalie on UND's 2009-13 teams.
SCHEEL BE COMING 'ROUND THE MOUNTAIN:
Freshman G
Adam Scheel has allowed two or fewer goals in 12 of his 16 appearances, including each of the last six. In the process, Scheel lowered his goals against average to 1.91 and leads the nation's freshmen in that category.
SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS
North Dakota peppered Canisius goalie Blake Weyrick with 17 shots on goal in the third period Friday. It marked the most in a third period this season for UND and tied for the most in any period this year. The Fighting Hawks then fired 23 shots on goal in the first period Saturday at netminder Matt Ladd, part of a season-high 49 shots on goal for the game. For the series, UND tallied 82 shots on goal but just two found the back of the net.
NO SHOT, SHERLOCK
On the other end, UND only allowed 14 shots on goal Friday against Canisius, the lowest shot total for an opponent this season (previously 16 vs. Bemidji State Oct. 13). In the series, North Dakota out-shot Canisius, 82-30.
IN THE FACE!
UND won 85 of the 125 faceoffs in the series at Canisius. North Dakota's
Rhett Gardner won 33 of 50 (.660) draws while
Nick Jones was 28 for 41 (.682) in the faceoff circle.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
North Dakota suffered its first-ever setbacks to Canisius in the all-time series in the nine games contested. UND had out-scored the Griffs, 41-5, in the previous seven games before Friday's 3-1 loss and Saturday's 2-1 defeat.
SENDEN IT IN
Mark Senden has three goals this season and all have been big markers for the freshman. Senden went into last weekend with a pair of goals-- both game-winners-- then added UND's first short-handed tally of the season Friday at Canisius.
POWER PLAY
North Dakota broke its stretch of scoreless power plays Saturday when
Nick Jones scored in the first period at Canisius. UND had gone 23 straight man-advantage opportunities without a PPG.
SPREADING IT OUT
North Dakota's last 10 goals have come from nine different players. Since
Rhett Gardner's winner in the third period of the 4-3 victory over Alaska Anchorage Nov. 24, UND had a different lamp-lighter in the month of December. and only
