GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- North Dakota's offense got kick-started midway through the second period and never let up in an 8-1 blowout of Canisius Saturday evening at Ralph Engelstad Arena. UND trailed 1-0 through one until
Mark Senden's goal a little more than seven minutes into the second got things rolling for North Dakota.
Canisius got on the board first with Austin Alger finally solving
Adam Scheel for the Golden Griffs' first goal of the series. UND had multiple Grade A chances to equalize in the first, including a five-minute major power play but came up empty. The shot advantage continued to be tilted heavily in favor of North Dakota, 14-3, through the first period.
"Guys were in the lockerroom after the first period and, you know, saying that wasn't good enough," UND head coach
Brad Berry said. "We talked about it and the guys needed to take a step and I think some of our older guys did take a step in that second period. So, it was a learning experience for us as far as knowing that you have to make sure you bring it every shift and every period and I'm just proud of the way our guys did respond after the first."
Senden tied the score at the 7:24 mark of the second period.
Jordan Kawaguchi entered the zone along the far wall and fed a perfect centering pass to Senden, who buried it to tie the score.
The offense then took off later in that period with two more goals to go into the third with a 3-1 lead.
Collin Adams threw a shot on net, the rebound came to
Jordan Kawaguchi then Adams circled around the net and potted it home for what would become the game winner. But, there's was much more to follow.
Gabe Bast got his second in as many nights to end that second period, then back-to-back goals by
Cole Smith and
Harrison Blaisdell in a 49 second span staked UND to a quick 5-1 advantage. Not even three minutes later,
Andrew Peski got into the act with his first of the season and the onslaught was on.
Smith grabbed another tally at the 11:35 mark and graduate transfer
Westin Michaud put a cherry on the win with his first UND goal with 89 seconds left, part of 19 UND players with at least a point on the week and 14 with two or more.
Scheel got the win in net with 11 saves Saturday.
Cole Smith was credited with two goals while
Jacob Bernard-Docker had four assists and
Jordan Kawaguchi piled up three assists in the win.
North Dakota takes to the road for the first time this season, heading to Mankato, Minn., for a weekend series at currently-third-ranked Minnesota State.
Notes: UND allowed just 23 shots on goal the entire series and put 77 on net ... North Dakota's 13 goals came from 10 different goal scorers in the series ... Smith, Bowen and Bast each registered two goals ... UND won 57 percent of its faceoffs in the series ... Harrison Blaisdell, Michaud and Shane Pinto all recorded their first UND goals this weekend ... Bernard-Docker registered a +5 plus/minus rating against Canisius.
