GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Senior transfer
Westin Michaud potted the overtime game-winner to boost UND past visiting Bemidji State, 2-1, Friday evening at Ralph Engelstad Arena in non-conference play.
All week, UND players and coaches termed Bemidji State's style of play as "heavy". The Beavers limited any quality scoring chances for North Dakota early and then got a lead in the second and they were intent on parking on it.
BSU's (0-1-2) power-play tally at the 4:58 mark of the second period loomed large as the Beavers were intent on making it hold up. Goalie Zach Driscoll played his part, kicking aside 25 of 27 shots, including 20 saves after the first period.
Adam Scheel was equally as impressive in the UND net, making 16 saves including a pair of breakaway chances to keep it close.
Shane Pinto had a chance in the middle stages of the third period but couldn't convert on the chance. Kawaguchi finally broke through, though, at the 14:13 mark of the third to tie it.
Jacob Bernard-Docker entered the zone along the far wall and got the puck deep before centering it to Kawaguchi, who redirected it in front for his first goal of the season.
Mark Senden nearly ended it in the final minute of the third when Driscoll made the stop then
Collin Adams got around the defense and with a clear path to the net but the puck trickled over the top of the cage.
Michaud finally sent the fans home happy 52 seconds into the extra period when
Shane Pinto won a draw in the BSU end right to Michaud at the top of the left circle and he solved Driscoll low on the glove side for the game-winning goal, his first as a Fighting Hawk and fifth of his career.
The teams will settle the series Saturday evening at the Ralph with the puck dropping at 7:07 p.m. on MidcoSN, the Home of Economy Radio Network and nchc.tv.
