Fighting Hawks Fall to NDSU; Await Sunday Results

FARGO, N.D. – Despite stopping a penalty kick in the waning minutes of the first half, and recording multiple chances on goal from set-pieces, the University of North Dakota fell to North Dakota State in the regular-season finale, 1-0. Goalkeeper Madi Livingston accounted for 10 saves on the night.

The Fighting Hawks (10-7-1, 4-4 Summit League) will now await the results of the Bison's (8-6-3, 3-2-2 Summit League) match against Denver, as well as Oral Roberts contest against Purdue Fort Wayne, to see if they qualify for The Summit League Tournament.

UND still sits in third place in The League standings with 12 points, one point ahead of NDSU and the Golden Eagles. The atmosphere at Dacotah Field resembled a playoff atmosphere as the frigid temperatures forced the fans in attendance to stand, cheer and support their sides as the Bison's pep band played at various times during the match.

"This was a testament to NCAA Division I soccer in the state of North Dakota," said Head Coach Chris Logan. "I thought it was a really good game between two good teams. When you look at the growth of the game and people hopefully being more interested in soccer and enjoying an atmosphere, I thought it was a really fun game."

The Fighting Hawks and Bison played a scoreless first 45-minutes as North Dakota's Madi Livingston stopped a penalty kick in the 41st minute of play, following a yellow card by Hannah Olson in the box. Ellie Schneider stepped to the spot and slotted the ball to the post on Livingston's left, but the freshman made comfortably made the stop keep the match scoreless.

"It was a good save (by Madi)," Logan added. "Even if they'd scored the penalty, I never felt like we weren't going to get back into it. I actually think it would have helped us because we played with more urgency when we were down."

The stop lifted UND as it maintained possession in the final minutes of play to control the last minutes of the half. The Bison held an 8-7 edge in shots in the half with a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.

North Dakota State got on the board 66 minutes into the match as Elyse Huber fired a ball at the net that deflected off of Olivia Knox and went into the net to break the scoreless cycle.

North Dakota had its opportunities as it worked up the wings on the attack; however, the chances were stopped by goalkeeper Monica Polgar, who closed the night with eight saves.

"We had some great chances in the first half, but the amount of chances we got going down the sides (of the field), the finishing just wasn't there. To win games, you got to score goals, and that was the only thing that was missing tonight, I felt," closed Logan.

A win by the Pioneers over the Bison, or a loss or a tie by Oral Roberts in Fort Wayne, would punch the Fighting Hawks first postseason ticket as an eligible NCAA Tournament participant in the Division I era.
