Â
PLYMOUTH, Mich.-- Native Michigander junior
Collin Adams scored the game-winner and added an assist while the UND netminders kicked aside 21 of 22 shots faced in a 3-1 exhibition win Saturday evening over the U.S. Under 18 National Team Developmental Program at USA Hockey Arena.
Â
Adams, from nearby Brighton, Mich., scored a third-period goal and also assisted on the first goal of the game in the opening period as North Dakota returned to action after a three-week layoff. Shorthanded five players that did not make the trip, UND didn't waver, including getting a solid effort from its backup goaltenders in the win.
Peter Thome saved all 14 shots his way in the first two periods while
Harrison Feeney worked the final 20 minutes and only allowed a 6-on-4 goal in the final minutes in his eight shots faced.
Â
Late in the first period,
Jonny Tychonick put UND up 1-0 when he buried a centering feed from Adams on the power play. Adams shook defenders by spinning and weaving in the corner before backhanding a pass to an awaiting Tychonick, who went to a knee and slammed it home for the lead.
Â
After a scoreless second, Adams scored to make it 2-0 midway through the third. It stayed there until
Matt Kiersted took a penalty and the US Team went to an extra attacker and broke the shutout on Thomas Bordeleau's goal at 18:29.
Â
Jasper Weatherby would answer that one quickly, though, firing a long shot before behind his own blue line that found the empty net and helped UND to the 3-1 victory.Â
Â
North Dakota begins the second half in earnest next weekend when it hosts Alabama Huntsville at Ralph Engelstad Arena in the final non-conference series of the season.
