GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota senior thrower
Molli Detloff repeated as the UND Female Athlete of the Year while senior running back
Brady Oliveira was dubbed the UND Male Athlete of the Year Tuesday night at the annual UND Athletics Night of Champions awards banquet. The event was held at the Empire Arts Center in downtown Grand Forks.
Detloff was named the Grace Rhonemus Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year, following up one of the most dominant one-year stretches in UND track and field history with more of the same. She is the only two-time Division I All-American in UND track and field history and is the school's record holder and an all-conference performer in both the hammer and discus throws. She holds the distinction of being the only thrower in UND history—male or female—to eclipse 200 feet in the hammer. She competed at the NCAA Regionals and the USA Championships and she also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. She becomes the first repeat winner of the award since Kierah Kimbrough (basketball) did so in 2008 and 2009.
Other female athlete of the year nominees included:
Jenna Janu (golf),
Lexi Klabo (basketball),
Katie Moller (soccer),
Isa Sullivan (tennis) and
Jordan Vail (volleyball).
Oliveira was named UND's Glenn "Red" Jarrett Male Athlete of the Year following a senior season that saw him lead the team in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, inching into the top 10 in both of those categories in his career at North Dakota. He paced the Fighting Hawks with 936 yards along the ground this season with eight rushing touchdowns, all of those scores coming in road games. He piled up a career-high 190 yards rushing at Idaho this season and had a 171-yard game with three scores in the win at Sacramento State. He is currently awaiting his next opportunity to play professionally and he is expected to be a very early pick in the upcoming CFL Draft.
Other male athlete of the year nominees included:
Lukas Buth (tennis),
Nolan Hovland (track and field),
Jeremy Kirk (golf),
Colton Poolman (hockey) and
Cortez Seales (basketball).
