GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Senior goalkeeper
Catherine Klein recorded five saves and a clean sheet to lead the University of North Dakota women's soccer team to 0-0 draw in the 2019 season opener versus Montana.
Klein, who suffered an injury in a preseason training session and missed the entire 2018 season, was the Big Sky Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017. In her return to Bronson Field, Klein helped a UND defense to 110 scoreless minutes and stopped five shots on goal. Her organizational skills also did not allow the Grizzlies to find the back of the net, despite leading the Fighting Hawks in corner kicks, 9-8.
Cat two years ago, was making 10 saves a game," said Head Coach
Chris Logan. "Today, she didn't have to make too many saves, but she organizes so well, she distributes really good, her presence in the box and her communication (skills were) great. (She did a great) job making sure everyone was organized against a very good team today."
The University of North Dakota had several opportunities to score on the afternoon, including a wide-open one-on-one situation between
Mimi Eiden and a defender in the 75th minute. Eiden slipped the ball past UM goalkeeper Claire Howard, shaking the goalie to the ground. However, Eiden pushed the ball too far to the left of the near post.
Only two minutes later, Eiden had a second crack at redemption and headed a ball to the far post off a cross, but the ball went right of the post to keep the match scoreless.
UND only recorded one shot on goal in the match, a dangerous ball from
Sarah Doran in the opening frame. North Dakota continued to pepper Howard in the Montana frame but was unable to test her properly.
"Offensively, we were excellent," Logan added. "Going forward, we had chances today. The thing I'm most disappointed about was that we didn't win, we should have been out of sight at halftime, but we'll learn from that."
The Fighting Hawks will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 25, hosting West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's College. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. at Bronson Field.
