GRAND FORKS, N.D. - With a pair of goals in the first half and an assist on one-of-four North Dakota goals in the second period,
Mara Yapello led the Fighting Hawks to a 6-0 victory over Chicago State on Senior Day.
Yapello scored the opener with service from
Bailey McNitt in the 22nd minute as the winger took two touches to create space and curled a ball to the far side netting. She deflected in her second brace on a punched through cross from
Megan Wright in the 39th minute to put UND on top, 2-0.
While Chicago State tested the defense and goalkeeper
Catherine Klein to the tune of three saves in the half, the Fighting Hawks free-flowing attack took flight in the second half as the ball found its way into the 18-yard box on most possessions.
"I thought we were a bit choppy in the first half and I have to credit (Chicago State) for that. They stuck to their game plan and did a really good job with it," said Head Coach
Chris Logan. "We were very clinical in the first half, we created three chances and scored two goals which hasn't necessarily been the case in the last few games, so that was nice. In the second half we switched things up a bit, and I thought we were phenomenal."
Cassie Giddings, who finished with a goal and two helpers in the second half, opened the scoring with service from Yapello in the 51st minute. She then dished a ball to McNitt in the 53rd and another to
Hannah McAra in the 66th minute as North Dakota took a 5-0 lead.
Ashley Ebeling headed the final goal home in the 78th minute as she slipped the ball to the inside post on the goalkeeper to close the match's scoring register. All told, six different University of North Dakota players accounted for a goal or an assist in the match.
UND will close the weekend versus Hawai'i on Sunday at Bronson Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Central.
